New inductees bring LPGA T&CP Hall of Fame membership to 25

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., Nov. 25, 2014 -- The Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Teaching and Club Professionals (T&CP) announced today that LPGA members Shirley Englehorn of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Donna White of West Palm Beach, Fla., will be inducted into the 2014 class of the LPGA T&CP Hall of Fame. The inductees will be honored next fall during the LPGA T&CP's National Conference and Hall of Fame reception.

"These individuals have given so much not only to the LPGA T&CP membership, but also to the entire golf industry," said Nancy Henderson, Chief Teaching Officer of the LPGA Teaching & Club Professionals. "We are proud to have these women as members of the LPGA and thrilled to honor them as the newest additions to the prestigious LPGA T&CP Hall of Fame."

The LPGA T&CP Hall of Fame was established in 2000 to recognize LPGA T&CP members who, through extraordinary dedication and outstanding achievement, have positioned themselves among the greatest women professionals in the game of golf.

With the induction, Englehorn and White bring the LPGA T&CP's Hall of Fame membership to 25.

2014 T&CP Hall of Fame Inductees Shirley Englehorn a long-time Colorado Springs resident, has displayed remarkable tenacity and resilience in her life-long dedication to the game of golf. Her personal devotion to the sport is evident in how she inspires those whom she teaches to love the game.

“I am deeply honored to be selected to enter the LPGA Teaching and Club Professional Hall of Fame,” said Englehorn. “I look forward to the induction in October and wish to thank so many people for this great honor.”

During her successful 20-year playing career, Englehorn, known as “The Lady in Red” because that was her favorite color to wear during tournaments, amassed a long list of notable accomplishments, including eleven LPGA victories. In 1970, she received the Mickey Wright award as the Associated Press Female Athlete of the Year after winning four consecutive LPGA tournaments, including
a thrilling 18-hole playoff victory at the LPGA Championship.

Englehorn served as President of the LPGA Tour, 1964-1965, and served on the LPGA Board for five more years in various capacities. She helped form the first Press Club for the LPGA during the mid 1960’s and became a national television sports broadcaster.

In 1969, the American Golf Writers Association presented her with the prestigious Ben Hogan Award for her comeback to golf after sustaining major injuries from two serious accidents. From 1964 to 1976, she was on the Sears Sporting Goods Advisory Staff, the only woman to be selected for such a role. Additionally, she helped to develop one of the very first lines of ladies golf shoes.

Englehorn joined the LPGA Teaching Division in 1965, earning her LPGA Master Professional certification after retiring from the tour in 1979. She conducted hundreds of exhibitions nationally and internationally, was voted one of the top six teachers in America by Golf Digest in 1976 and received the LPGA National Teacher of the Year award in 1978. Englehorn remains active in the golf industry as a teaching professional, most recently at the Garden of the Gods Club and Resort in Colorado Springs, promoting love of the game to the next generation of young golfers.

Donna White, born and raised in Kinston, North Carolina, attended the University of North Carolina-Greensboro, transferring to and graduating from the University of Florida in 1976. She attained her LPGA tour card in 1977, capturing her first two tournament titles in 1980 and her third in 1983 at the Sarasota Classic.

“I was truly elated to learn of my selection into the LPGA T&CP Hall of Fame. Knowing many of the past inductees, several were/are instrumental in guiding, inspiring, and directing me throughout my professional career, both as a player, instructor, and business owner,” said White. “This recognition is simply a reflection of those past, present, and future mentors who continue to touch peoples’ lives each and every day. They challenge us to equip ourselves with the tools and knowledge to be even better tomorrow and to pass their passion of learning forward!”

Moving to Palm Beach County in 1976, she immediately connected to her local community by hosting golf clinics, coaching at the local junior college, substitute teaching at a middle school in Belle Glade, and serving as Honorary Chair of the Palm Beach County Special Olympics.

Retiring from the tour in 1992, White transitioned from a career as a professional golfer into that of a golf professional. One of the first women in the industry to own and operate a golf professional concession company, Golf Professional Services, Inc., currently services three Palm Beach County municipal facilities. The company provides all merchandising, instruction, food and beverage, tournament operation assistance, club repair, and handicap services for each facility. In 1995, White co-founded the Junior Golf Foundation of America to serve as the junior golf development arm of her business.

In 2010, White semi-retired from the day-to-day operations of the company, but stays involved in strategic planning and development. Blending knowledge gained from both careers, White enjoys her “encore career” as a college professor at Keiser University College of Golf and Sport Management. She recently completed her Masters in Teaching and Learning. A professed “lifelong learner,” White spends most of her time pursuing her passion of education, learning not only from casual golfers who take lessons but from those college students interested in pursuing a career in the golf industry.

A few of White’s awards and honors include Top 50 Best Female Teachers, Golf Digest 2010 – present; LPGA Southeast Section Eagle Award, 2005; LPGA Ellen Griffin Rolex Award, 2006; LPGA Southeast Section and National Professional of the Year, 2008; LPGA Top 50 Instructor, 2009; PGA of America, SE Chapter, Merchandiser of the Year-Public Facility, 2003; Bell South/SEC Women’s Entrepreneur Award, 2000; Bell South/SEC Women’s Entrepreneur Award, 2000 and many other industry and community service awards.

White is also a member of the following Halls of Fame: University of Florida, Hall of Fame and Letterman’s Association; University of North Carolina-Greensboro; National Golf Coaches Association Players Hall of Fame; Palm Beach County Sports Hall of Fame. In 1999 White received special recognition when she was inducted into the Special Olympics-Palm Beach County Hall of Fame for her service on the Special Olympics International Golf Committee for over a decade. White travels throughout the world training and educating golf professionals about methods of teaching the game of
golf to people with disabilities.

Englehorn and White will join current LPGA Teaching and Club Professionals already in the Hall of Fame.
