Chella Choi defeated 54-hole leader Ha Na Jang in a playoff Sunday for her first win on the LPGA Tour at the Marathon Classic presented by Owens Corning + O-I.
Choi carded a bogey free 4-under 66 to tie Jang at 14-under par after 72 holes. The two returned to the 18th tee for a one hole playoff where Jang made bogey after her approach found the rough behind the green.
Choi has been playing some great golf as of late, making history at last week’s U.S. Women’s Open where she carded a 29 for 9-holes, a tournament record. Her dad has been on the bag for her since she turned pro in 2009 and planned to loop for her until she got her first win.
Jang, a rookie on Tour was trying to go wire-to-wire for the win Sunday.
World No.2 and defending champion Lydia Ko led by as many as two strokes at the turn but made bogey at 13 to fall one stroke behind. Her birdie for 17 moved her into a tie at the top but was unable to make birdie at 18 to get into the playoff.
