Soft and slow conditions await players at Highland Meadows Golf Club, the site of this week’s Marathon Classic presented by Owens Corning & O-I where the course took on nearly three inches of rain in the past week. The course will play to a par 72 at a yardage of 6,571 this week where six holes bring a winding creek into play.

“The creek system that goes through has overflowed three times in the last month and a half, as recently as last week we were flooded,” LPGA Rules Official Dan Maselli says. “We’re hoping with good conditions it will firm up but right now it’s soft and the greens are very soft.”

It’s the greens that will present the biggest challenge for players this week. Like what players saw last week at Lancaster Country Club, putting surfaces will be slower this week, with greens running at 10 and a half to 11 on the stimpmeter, slower than what club members are used to playing at Highland Meadows.

“They actually have it closer to 12 for their members, but some of the slopes on the greens we’d lose hole locations if we had it too fast,” said Maselli. “Because the golf course is well known and has small greens, it’s almost going to be a putting competition. Whoever makes the most putts.”

The rough is a mix of bentgrass, which runs through the fairways and greens, and Kentucky bluegrass which Maselli says is currently two and a half inches in height and should be three inches tall come Sunday with the rough being mowed just once more on Friday.
