10 Canadians are in the field this week in their home country hoping to end the 14-year winless drought by Canadians on the LPGA Tour, the last victory coming in 2001 with Lorie Kane. Which got us thinking back to that year Kane won and what else was happening around the world of golf and in the news back in 2001. Here’s a look back at the year that was.
At the 2001 Standard Register Ping, Annika Sorenstam made history as the first in LPGA Tour history to shoot 59. She became just the sixth player in professional golf to accomplish the feat.
The 30-year old Sorenstam recorded the bogey free 13-under round during the second round of the event. She hit every green in regulation, missed only one fairway and had just 25 putts.
Karrie Webb won three times in 2001, including both the U.S. Women’s Open and LPGA Championship. She became the youngest to win the LPGA career grand slam with her victory that year at the LPGA Championship age the age of 26.
Over on the PGA Tour, David Duval won the 2001 Open Championship for his first and only major championship victory. The former world number one entered the final round at Royal Lytham & St. Annes Golf Club tied for the lead with Alex Cejka, Bernhard Langer and Ian Woosnam. Duval shot a final round 67 to win by three strokes ahead of Niclas Fasth.
In other news, Jennifer Lopez became the first to have a number one album, "JLo," and number one movie at the box office, "The Wedding Planner," in the same week, Apple launched the iPod and Janet Jackson’s “All for You” was the most popular song of 2001.
