Inbee Park defends her title this week at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship where she will try to make history at this week’s event by becoming just the second to win three consecutive years, the last to do so was Annika Sorenstam between 2003 and 2005. That got us thinking back to what was happening when Sorenstam pulled off the feat and what else was going on in the world of golf in 2005. A Dream Season for Sorenstam

Annika Sorestam’s win at the 2005 McDonalds LPGA Championship was one of just 10 victories for Sorenstam that season. She topped the money list, was named Rolex Player of the Year and also took home the Vare Trophy.

Her victory at the McDonalds was her ninth major championship and third consecutive victory in the event.

“I have to be honest, I do have to pinch myself sometimes when I look at my results,” Sorenstam said after winning her third straight McDonalds LPGA. “I mean, I feel like I’m a little girl from Sweden that came over here to follow my dreams and hope to win a few golf tournaments. When I look at my bio in the LPGA book, I get overwhelmed, definitely.”

The Pink Panther a Rookie on Tour

Paula Creamer joined the LPGA Tour in 2005, wasting no time in clinching her first victory at the Sybase Classic in May, becoming the youngest winner on Tour at the time at 18-years of age. She followed that up with her second victory in July at the Evian Masters where she cruised to an 8-stroke victory ahead of Lorena Ochoa and Michelle Wie. Her performance in her first season on Tour earned her the Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year award.

Birdie Kim shocked the world when she holed out from a greenside bunker on the final hole of the 2005 U.S. Women’s Open at Cherry Hills Country Club to win by two, ahead of Brittany Lang and 17-year old Morgan Pressel.

“Actually, I am not a real good bunker player,” Kim said after her victory. “Also, I change my sand wedge about two weeks ago. That club is not used yet to me. So I have a lot of miss this week with bunker shot. Finally, I make it.”

The victory was the first and only win so far for the South Korean on the LPGA Tour.

Woods Dominates 2005 Season PGA Tour

Tiger Woods won six times in 2005 including the Masters and Open Championship. He was named Player of the Year and leading money leader for a record seventh time.
