BOSTON, June 2, 2015 – The Legends Tour eagerly awaits its return to French Lick Resort this summer for the Legends Championship, presented by Old National Bank.
The Pete Dye Course at French Lick Resort in Indiana recently hosted the Champions Tour and the 2015 Senior PGA Championship. The resort will host The Legends Tour, the official senior tour of the LPGA, for the third year.
None of the Champions Tour players matched the course-record, 9-under-par 63 recorded by Sherri Steinhauer at the 2014 Legends Championship. Steinhauer finished as runner-up to 2014 champion, Laurie Rinker.
A field of 54 LPGA Legends Tour players will compete for a purse of $300,000 at this year’s Legends Championship, set for Aug. 28-30.
The 36-hole event is the Legends Tour’s annual major championship and will kick off with a pro-am tournament on Aug. 28, followed by two competitive rounds on Aug. 29-30.
“I haven’t yet played the Pete Dye Course at French Lick, but I did watch a few holes when the PGA seniors were there,” said Michelle McGann, competing in her first year on The Legends Tour. “I can see there is a lot of undulation on the course and it will be a challenge.”
In her first two starts this season on the Legends Tour, McGann, winner of seven LPGA Tour events, has finished tied for 12th and tied for seventh. McGann hopes to break through for a win in the Hoosier State in August.
“I look forward to playing a new course, and I will play a few practice rounds to prepare,” added McGann. “I have some friends from nearby states coming out to watch the tournament, so it will be like old times.”
Great Britain’s Laura Davies, inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame this year, has committed to play in this year’s championship. Davies owns 82 professional wins worldwide, including one win on the Legends Tour and 20 LPGA Tour titles.
Other top early commitments include Rinker, who will return to defend her title, and Steinhauer, who will seek her third Legends Tour tournament win.
Half a dozen “Super Legends” (age 63 and over) will compete for a separate purse. Players who have previously competed in this division include LPGA Hall of Famer Sandra Haynie, three-time U.S. Women’s Open champion Susie Berning, and LPGA veteran players Jane Blalock, Sandra Palmer and Judy Dickinson.
Rinker won last year’s rain-shortened event in 36 holes by one shot to edge out Steinhauer, who carded 10 birdies and one bogey en route to her second-round course record. The final round was canceled due to inclement weather.
