Being able to leave something behind, a lasting impact or legacy is something nearly everyone strives to achieve.
This week in testament to the hard work invested by Louise Suggs and her fellow founders, the longest running non-major on the LPGA Tour hosts the game’s greatest players for the 43rd year at the Cambia Portland Classic.
Suggs passed away Friday at the age of 91 with many players taking the opportunity this week to chat with fellow members about the founder and share their memories of her.
In 2012, So Yeon Ryu received the Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year award and had fond memories about receiving the award from the founder. “I was so honored to have got Rookie of the Year award, especially with her name on it,” said Ryu. “Without founders we cannot be here, so we’re always really appreciative to all the founders, especially Louise Suggs who is one of the best golfers we’ve ever had.”
Azahara Munoz was also recognized with the award in 2010 and was grateful to have gotten to know Suggs. “It was such an honor to meet Louise and get the Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year award,” said Munoz. “She was just a fun lady and we’re so lucky to have people like her who founded our tour and we need to keep doing what they did and be thankful for what they brought to our lives.”
2013 JTBC Founders Cup champion Stacy Lewis spent time with Suggs at the event, which she believes the founder will be most remembered for. “I think her legacy honestly is the Founders Cup,” said Lewis. “To Louise and all the players and as long as that tournament is around I think she’s going to be associated with that event and I think that’s a pretty cool legacy.”
When asked about what struck her most about Suggs, Sandra Gal remembered the founder’s legendary spirit. “She was just uncompromisingly herself,” said Gal. “It really seemed like she didn’t care what people thought about her and I thought that was a really good quality in someone who was a leader all her life and probably pushed their innovative ideas without other people having thought that before, so that was a really great quality about her”
