Brooke Henderson birdied her final hole of the day Friday to take the outright lead at -11 under par in the second round of the Cambia Portland Classic. Battling rain and wind in the afternoon, Henderson stayed patient after getting off to a slow start to card a 5-under, 67.
“I gave myself a lot of great opportunities and just rubbed some edges, but I was happy with one‑under because it was raining and there was a couple other different conditions than yesterday,” Henderson told the media after her round. “But then the back nine, especially the last couple holes, I made a lot of birdies and really started to make my climb, which was exciting, and it's nice to finish with a birdie.”
Henderson leads bye one-stroke ahead of Caroline Masson who carded a season low 64 on Friday as well as the low round of the day at Columbia Edgewater Country Club to move to 10-under par, one shot behind Henderson.
“It was really solid, fun, and, yeah, I'm excited about that round. It was really stress‑free,” Masson told the media Friday. “It doesn't really feel that much different. Maybe a couple more putts here and there, and actually, I played the par‑5s much better. I birdied all the par‑5s today. Didn't birdie them at all yesterday. That just makes a big difference. They're easy to hit good shots there.”
Candie Kung, Jenny Shin and Julieta Granada are tied for third at 9-under par.
The cut is at even par. Some notables that won’t be around this weekend include Paula Creamer who finished at 1-over par, two-time Cambia Portland Classic champion Suzann Pettersen and Brittany Henderson both at 5-over par.
