GAL GOES LOW
Sandra Gal found herself taking advantage of “moving day” as she worked her way up the leaderboard from T-22 to T-3. Gal fired a 7-under round and sits six shots back of 54-hole leader Brooke Henderson.
“I did have a lot of fun,” Gal said. “I hit a lot of good approaches, so I didn’t even have to make very long putts, which was really nice, and just felt pretty comfortable out there today. It’s a beautiful golf course, beautiful weather, so you can’t ask for more.”
Gal will be playing in the final group tomorrow with leader Brooke Henderson (-18) and Morgan Pressel (-13) vying for the win. Although Gal made up some ground today she knows she will have her work cut out for her on Sunday.
“One good round isn’t going to do it on the weekend,” Gal said. “I would probably need another low one tomorrow. But looking at the leaderboard, Brooke Henderson is doing really well after nine, so I’ll probably have to do some catch up.”
PARTY LIKE IT’S 1999
Europe Solheim Cup Vice Captain Maria McBride made some noise Saturday at the Cambia Portland Classic with an ace on the 13th hole.
“We were actually able to see it go in, which was nice,” McBride said. “I had I think it was 168 to the pin, and I hit a 6 iron, and a perfect little draw, and it pitched right in front, straight towards the pin, right at the front edge of the green, and just released perfectly in the hole.”
McBride has had a pair of top-10 finishes this year, including a T-4 at Volunteers of America North Texas Shootout in May, but as for hole-in-ones McBride hasn’t hit one of those in quite some time.
“Golfing career it was my fourth, third one in competition,” McBride said. “I had one actually at the Tour Championship way back in ‘99 in Mobile, Alabama, so that was the last one I had, so it’s been a while since I had one.”
EAGLES FOR A CAUSE
Six total eagles were made on Saturday at the Cambia Portland Classic and players raised $6,000 toward the Wounded Warrior Project as part of the season-long Wounded Warrior Project® Weekends.
The six eagles today brings the total for the year to 182 and $182,000 raised.
Wounded Warrior Project® Weekends is a season-long charity program that will be tied into the Race to the CME Globe. Each Saturday and Sunday at LPGA tournaments, CME Group will donate $1,000 to Wounded Warrior Project® or each eagle that is recorded. This amount will increase to $5,000 for each eagle during the weekend of the CME Group Tour Championship and a formal check will be presented to the Wounded Warrior Project® during the trophy ceremony at the CME Group Tour Championship.
