DELRAY BEACH, Fla., Oct. 25, 2016 – LPGA Hall of Famer Beth Daniel hopes that three is the charm when she makes her third tournament start at this week’s Walgreens Charity Championship presented by The Seagate Country Club.
The event will be staged Saturday and Sunday (Oct. 29-30), at The Seagate Country Club. The tournament pro-am is set for Friday, Oct. 28.
Daniel lives in Delray Beach and will be one of the hometown favorites competing in The Legends Tour’s season-ending event. Winning her first Legends Tour title would be even sweeter if it came this week in her hometown.
“I was in Michigan all summer and just returned to Delray Beach, so I haven’t had as much time as I would have liked to prepare,” said Daniel, winner of 33 LPGA titles, including one major championship. “But it’s always fun to have a tournament in your hometown and it’s nice to be able to sleep in your own bed and go to your own home at the end of each day.”
Daniel is also one of 13 Florida-based professionals in the field that includes another Florida favorite, Laurie Rinker of Stuart.
Playing host to several fellow professionals in her home this week, Daniel admits there is a premium for solid tee shots on the tight Seagate Country Club course and she also hopes to get her putter working early on Seagate’s speedy greens.
“Seagate is a very narrow golf course, so hitting it straight off the tee is a must,” added Daniel, who has six top-10 finishes in nine Legends Tour appearances. “I usually work on my driver going into the tournament so I have the confidence to keep the ball in play.”
The third annual championship will feature a field of 52 legends of the LPGA competing for a purse of $250,000. Seven Legends will compete for a separate purse in the Legends Honors Division for players age 63 and over.
Daniel is one of eight LPGA and World Golf Hall of Fame members in this year’s field, which includes 2015 and 2017 U.S. Solheim Cup Captain Juli Inkster, a 31-time LPGA Tour winner and two-time Legends Tour winner, as well as 35-time LPGA Tour winner Patty Sheehan and Pat Bradley, winner of 31 LPGA titles.
In addition, Miami teaching professional Paula Pearson Tucker and University of Miami women’s golf coach Patti Rizzo are also in the field.
Two top senior women amateurs, Pamela Kuong of Wellesley, Mass., the 2015 U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur runner-up, as well as Mary Jane Hiestand of Naples, Fla., the 2016 Florida State Senior Women’s Amateur champion, will also compete.
Tickets to the championship are available at Walgreens stores for $10 – a $5 savings for tickets purchased at the gate. Kids 13 and under, as well as active military with I.D., get into the tournament free.
Admission includes access to the Walgreens Healthy Living Expo and a “Steps with Balance Rewards” on-course walk.
Sunday ticket-holders will have free admission into an on-site concert featuring national recording artist Little River Band following the championship. The concert will start at approximately 5 p.m.
All ticket proceeds from the Walgreens Charity Championship will benefit charity partners, The Dan Marino Foundation and Achievement Centers for Children and Families.
Tee times for the Walgreens Charity Championship will start at 8:30 a.m. each day, with gates opening at 8 a.m.
Public parking is free and will be located in the Delray Square II Shopping Center. The entrance is adjacent to the IHOP restaurant at Atlantic Avenue and Watley.
Complimentary shuttle service to the tournament entrance on The Seagate Country Club grounds is available. Patrons without tickets may board the shuttle and purchase tickets or pick up will call/reserved tickets at the admissions gate located next to the Seagate clubhouse.
