For the second day in a row, Charley Hull sealed victory on the 17th green in the Citibanamex Lorena Ochoa Match Play Presented by Areomexico and Delta but at least on Friday she felt a lot better after suffering a fainting spell midway through the back nine in her first-round match.
England's Hull, who thinks that she picked up a bug coming into this week at the Club de Golf Mexico, won a see-sawing encounter in the round of 32 with Thai Pornanong Phatlum 2&1 after being conceded a birdie putt from inside two feet at the par-five 17th.
"I felt like I hit it pretty good," Hull told LPGA.com. "I missed a few shots out there but apart from that, I feel I am pretty solid. I feel so much better than I did yesterday."
Less than 24 hours earlier, Hull had to get medical treatment after almost collapsing in the 12th fairway during her first-round match against American Nelly Korda, and she was diagnosed with low blood sugar.
"It was probably a bug in the morning and it got worse and worse in the afternoon, probably from dehydration," said the 21-year-old from Kettering, who won her first LPGA Tour title at last year's season-ending CME Group Tour Championship.
“I felt really faint on the 12th fairway and I just kind of collapsed ... I kept seeing flashing lights and that’s when the medics came out. I was a bit low on blood sugar so they gave me some Pepsi and a syrup with lots of sugar in it, and I started feeling a little bit better."
Hull also had to contend with a two-hour suspension in play on Thursday due to the threat of lightning before completing a 2-and-1 victory over Korda.
"When I came in from my round yesterday, I felt a lot better and I ate some steak," said Hull. "I felt a little bit sickly today but nowhere near as bad as yesterday."
Against Pornanong, Hull came from 2-down after five holes to go 2-up after 12 before the Thai won the 14th and 15th holes to level the match.
However, a missed putt by Pornanong from short range at the 16th handed Hull a 1-up advantage and she closed out the match after hitting a superb third shot from rough short and right of the green to 18 inches.
"I was hitting some good shots in (to the greens) and I drove it pretty well, but I just missed a few putts and I holed some good putts so it probably evened itself out," Hull said of her overall game.
Next up, she will face Korean Sei Young Kim, a 3&2 winner over Danielle Kang.
"It’s going to be a good match, because she is a really good player," Hull said of Sei Young. "She beat me last year in the International Crown so hopefully I can get my own back."
