(5) Mi Jung Hur Defeats (2) Shanshan Feng – 1-Up
Mi Jung Hur advances to the semifinals after Shanshan Feng missed birdie putt on No. 18 to extend the match.
Talk about consistent, Mi Jung Hur and Shanshan Feng match each other shot for shot and were All Square throughout most of the quarterfinal match. Hur bogeyed No. 13 giving Feng a 1-Up advantage, but Feng gave it right back with a bogey on the par-4 15th to even out the match.
Feng missed a short birdie putt after giving Hur a 1-foot birdie on the 17th to go 1-Down with one to play.
Hur upsets the No. 2 seed Feng 1-Up.
(1) Ariya Jutanugarn Defeats (3) Cristie Kerr – Wins in 19 Holes
It took one extra hole to determine a winner.
The match went back and forth throughout much of play with Ariya Jutanugarn going 1-Up after a birdie on the opening hole. But Cristie Kerr answered with two birdies of her on to take a 1-Up lead heading into the fourth hole. Jutanugarn would go on to win five additional holes to sit 3-Up through 11.
Kerr’s 8-foot putt on the 12th to moved her within two, but Jutanugarn drained a 35-foot birdie putt on the 13th to go back to 3-Up as they headed to the 14th.
“After making that putt I felt a lot more confident, and then I start to miss my short putt again and I lost confidence again,” said Jutanugarn.
Kerr made a solid effort on the back nine with two birdies, coupled with a few mistakes by Jutanugarn; she squared the match at the 17th, winning three of the last five holes.
Jutanugarn won the match on the 19th and advanced to the semifinals.
(9) Michelle Wie Defeats (11) Angel Yin – Wins in 20 Holes
It took 20 holes for Michelle Wie to defeat rookie Angel Yin
Yin built an early lead on the front nine with four birdies and an eagle to sit 3-Up at the turn. Wie staged the biggest comeback this week, and it all started with her last nine. With two birdies, coupled with a few mistakes by Yin; she squared the match at the 16th, winning five of the last seven holes.
She played so good, she eagled No. 2 and No. 6, I think she was five-under in seven holes, she played great,” said Wie. “I’m really proud of my caddie for motivating me and keeping me in my head. And we fought so hard out there.”
Wie chipped in from off the green to extend the match and birdied the 20th hole to move on to the semifinals.
(2) Sei Young Kim Defeats (5) Karine Icher – 5 & 4
Sei Young Kim never trailed in the quarterfinal match, defeating Karine Icher 5 & 4.
After Kim had nestled her birdie attempt to one foot on the 14th, Icher was unable to convert her 6-foot par putt. Kim wins, 5 & 4.
“I played really good, I was striking the ball well,” said Kim. “She is a really great player so it was a really good match.”
Kim will face Mi Jung Hur tomorrow in the semifinals.
“Before today, we talked a little bit,” explained Kim. “If you win today you might play with me tomorrow so ‘see you tomorrow’ she said. It came true.”
