(5) Mi Jung Hur Defeats (1) Lydia Ko – 1-Up
In the first match of the day, Mi Jung Hur won in an upset, defeating No. 1 seed Lydia Ko to advance to the quarterfinals.
Hur, knowing she needed to play well against Ko, took the early lead with birdies on No. 3 and No. 4 to go 2-Up. But Ko capitalized on mistakes by Hur to square the match a few holes later. (specifics on mistakes and which holes?)
“It was very tough, definitely because you are playing number 1 in the world, Lydia
Ko,” said Hur. “We both missed a few shots, a few bogeys, but I made more birdies than her that’s why I was able to beat her. I was 2-Up, and she just made a birdie on No. 17, so I could not relax. It was a tough match.”
Hur took the lead on No. 13 and held on to win 1-Up.
In prep for this afternoon’s match against Shanshan Feng, Hur plans to grab a bite to eat, work with her driver on the range and relax before the next match.
(3) Cristie Kerr Defeats (15) Cydney Clanton - 3 & 2
Cristie Kerr continues to dominate on the course and advances to the Round of 8 after defeating Cydney Clanton 3 & 2.
Kerr was off to a quick start winning the first three holes to go 3-Up. The two matched each other shot for shot over the next seven holes before Clanton made an eagle at the 11th hole to cut into Kerr's lead, but it wasn't enough to shift the momentum. Kerr made birdie on the 16th hole to close out the match.
(9) Michelle Wie Defeats (12) Marina Alex – 5 & 4
Michelle Wie struck first with a birdie on No. 2 to go 1-Up in the match against her good friend, Marina Alex, but one hole later Alex squared the match with a birdie of her own.
“It was really tough; she drained a really long one on me we went back and forth. It’s just a shame that we had to play each other kind of early on, but it was fun."
Wie is keeping it simple this week and just trying to make birdies and have fun during the matches.
“The goal about match play you want to finish as early as you can, try not to make it to 18,” said Wie. “You know just trying to birdie, try to have fun out there and take advantages of opportunities that I have and that’s what I need to do moving forward.”
(11) Angel Yin Defeats (10) Sandra Gal – 3 & 2
Rookie Angel Yin continues to shine in match play as she advances to the Round of 8 after defeating Sandra Gal 3 & 2.
Yin bogeyed the first hole to go 1-Down but followed with a birdie on No. 2 to even out the match against Gal.
The youngest player that remains in the field, admits to not having much experience in match play other than in junior golf, but she was able to capitalize on mistakes make by Gal throughout the day to win the match 3 & 2.
(2) Sei Young Kim Defeats (3) Charley Hull 3 & 1
Sei Young Kim capitalized on a missed putt by Charley Hull to go 1-Up at the opening hole.
The match went back and forth throughout much of play with Kim going 1-Up early in the match. Kim defeats No. 3 seed with a late flurry of birdies on the back nine.
