Gaby Lopez and Alejandra Llaneza grew up watching Lorena Ochoa and followed her into the professional ranks, but Ochoa wants there to be more players from her home country of Mexico to play on Tour. Last weekend, at Club Campestre De La Ciudad De Mexico, she hosted the IGPM (Impulsando al Golf Professional Mexicano) Pro-Am to raise money for the organization, which funds and supports women aspiring to play the game in Mexico. She called on the support of her fellow Mexicans in Lopez and Llaneza who lent their support to the event, as well as Columbia’s Mariajo Uribe and Paola Moreno. Michelle Wie also made a special appearance.
“It’s cool to see how one day a friend on tour asks you to help her out in her event, and some other times it’s you asking for help,” Lopez told LPGA.com. “The way we all support each other, it’s just sincere.”
Lopez grew up playing in Mexico City, where she spent her off-season with friends and family and preparing for the 2018 season.
“I have been practicing hard with my coach Horacio Morales and with one of my best friends Ana Menendez, she plays on the Ladies European Tour. This way practice becomes fun and challenging within us.”
The 115th ranked player in the world has two career top-10s since joining the Tour in 2016.
“I am very fortunate to come back and play my third season next to wonderful friends on Tour and embrace the challenge of getting better playing against the best players in the world.”
Lopez makes her third start in the Bahamas at next week’s season opener, where she looks to finish for the first time inside the top-20.
