Lexi Thompson started the final day two shots off the lead, but you can bet she started Sunday donning her ladybug earrings and without number four golf balls in her bag. Thompson shared her two superstitions with LPGA.com; she always wears ladybug earnings and never plays with number four golf balls. Thompson carded a final-round 67, needing all 18 holes, to claim her 11th career LPGA Tour victory at the 2019 ShopRite LPGA Classic presented by Acer. The win marked Thompson’s seventh consecutive season with at least one victory (2013-2019). It’s the longest active streak on the LPGA Tour.
Thompson got off to a hot start in the final round with two birdies through her first three holes, followed by a bogey on No. 4 and birdies on No. 5 and No. 9 to make the turn at 3-under-par. Thompson stayed patient as the winds picked up on the Bay Course, finishing birdie-par-eagle to land at the top of the leaderboard.
"I got chills; like my hair on my arms was like sticking up once I made that putt," said Thompson of her eagle at No. 18. "I hit a 3-wood off the tee because I didn't hit driver all day today just to keep my 3-wood lower in the wind, and I hit it in the left rough, and I kind of had a little sketchy lie. I knew it was going to jump, and then it was blowing 30 miles per hour downwind, and I had 190 to the front, 200 pin, and it's crazy to think about all the numbers that we were thinking about, but we were like, land it 30 yards short, so 160, and then with a jumper lie and then the wind I ended up hitting a pitching wedge, which is my 135 club, from 190. Ended up, I guess, landing 50 yards short and rolling up there."
Thompson posted three sub-par rounds in New Jersey to finish at 12-under par and one shot clear of 2019 U.S. Women's Open champion Jeongeun Lee6. American Ally McDonald finished in solo third at 9-under par.
