Where Things Stand Heading into Sunday Singles

Europe 8, USA 8

Europe took a narrow one-point lead into Saturday’s matches, leading Team USA 4.5 to 3.5. The Americans held their own during the morning foursomes and kept the Cup within reach by splitting the session with the Europeans, each taking home two points.

For the Americans, the highlight of the morning came from sisters Jessica and Nelly Korda, who teamed up for the second consecutive day in the foursomes matches. In a repeat of day one, the pair dominated their match. The sisters defeated Carlota Ciganda and Bronte Law, 6 and 5, matching the record for the largest margin of victory in a foursomes match at the Solheim Cup. Team USA’s Morgan Pressel and Marina Alex also secured a point for the Americans after a stunning comeback victory. The pair trailed 4 down early in their match, but came back to win with four straight birdies on the closing stretch to win 2 and 1.

Europe recorded a pair of impressive victories of their own. Georgia Hall and Celine Boutier teamed up for the second day in a row and kept their winning streak alive with a 3-and-2 victory over Lizette Salas and Ally McDonald. Europe’s Charley Hull and Azahara Munoz, who have each played in three Solheim Cups but are only playing together for the first time this week, won in convincing fashion for the second consecutive day with a 4-and-3 victory over Megan Khang and Danielle Kang. Europe led 6.5 to USA 5.5 through the morning session.

The cold and windy conditions further deteriorated in the afternoon as rain moved into the area and winds gusted upwards of 45 mph. Those challenging conditions pushed three of the four matches to the 18th hole. Team USA led the afternoon four-ball matches, winning 2.5 points against 1.5 for Team Europe.

American rookies Brittany Altomare and Annie Park were impressive in their match with Europe’s Suzann Pettersen and Anne van Dam, who were victorious on day one. The rookies never trailed in the match and exchanged pars with the Europeans on the final hole to win 1 up. In a departure from the pod system, which captain Juli Inkster has used this week and in her prior two stints as captain, she paired Lexi Thompson with Marina Alex, who were in separate

pods. They faced Europe’s Jodi Ewart Shadoff and Caroline Masson. Both sides missed putts on the 18th hole to win the match and instead settled for a Halve. In the third match of the afternoon, Ally McDonald and Angel Yin looked to repeat the success they had on day one. Despite the Americans going 4 up through their first five holes, Georgia Hall and Celine Boutier rallied to square the match at the 16th hole and closed with two birdies to win the match 2 up. It secured the only full point of the session for Europe and brought the duo’s record to 3-0 as partners this week. Lizette Salas and Danielle Kang reunited for the final match of the day. They trailed early, but took the lead at the par 4, 7th hole and never looked back. They won the match 2 up.
