On the par-4 15th during the third round of the Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational, Mi Jung Hur came up with perhaps the shot of the tournament at Midland Country Club.
Her playing partner for Team MI6, Jeongeun Lee6, missed the fairway in the right rough and the ball was positioned behind a tree with very little room for Hur to operate. What happened next not only kept the duo in the hunt, but helped them end Friday under par and in a tie for fourth at 13-under par overall.
“Fortunately, I could see the flag and there was a way to the green if I could hook it,” said Hur. “I was a little worried about my 7-iron. It was either going to break or my head is going to really hurt. But it was a very important shot for us, so I just ignored my hand or the club and hit it.
“Just a little bit of a scratch on the shaft, but it is fine.”
Even Lee6 was in awe.
“That was an amazing shot,” she said. “I just said, ‘Thank you.’”
Two shot back of the lead with 18 holes remaining, Team MI6 is undoubtedly in contention. They have a couple ideas of what Saturday in Midland, Mich., looks like, and winning would just be an added bonus to what they have set their aspirations to be.
“Instead of a goal, I want to make some good memories with M.J.,” said Lee6. “Yeah, of course I hope to play well, but I don’t want to focus too much on the end result.”
