The Aon Risk Reward Challenge hole this week at Crown Colony Golf and Country Club, No. 13, lived up to its name for many at the LPGA Drive On Championship on Thursday. Only 14 birdies were made. Key club decisions went into account for everyone in the field. For Hee Young Park, the par 4 was anything but a walk in the park. After hitting her tee shot into the water, Park said she “didn’t do very well” afterwards. She walked away with a double bogey, one of two recorded on that hole during the day. But as she headed to the 14th tee, Park knew that one mistake wasn’t going to wipe the smile off her face.
“I thought, I'm not going to die, so this is not the end; don't worry about this little double. You know, still a long way to go. So, I wasn't worried about any double,” said Park. “It could be, you know, a couple of chances coming up, you know, some trouble shots, so that was one of them. I didn't worry about it.”
After mentally resetting, Park turned on her A-game for the remaining holes, posting four birdies and only one bogey on her last five holes. Despite the double, Park closed her back nine with a 33 and finished with a 4-under 68 to sit in a tie for 12th going into the second round.
“It was a really good feeling because I was really in the zone. I didn't really worry about any pressure, anything. Just let it flow with the golf and the rhythm,” said Park. “And I [was paired with the] other girls. They were really nice girls, too, so I was really comfortable and enjoyed it.”
