EWA BEACH, Oahu, Hawaii (March 21, 2022) – The LPGA Tour and LOTTE announced today that Hoakalei Country Club in Ewa Beach, Oahu, Hawaii, will host the 2022 LOTTE Championship. The tournament will be held April 13-16 and will feature a field of 144 players competing for a $2 million purse, with $300,000 awarded to the winner.
“We are very excited to bring the 2022 LOTTE Championship to Hoakalei Golf Club,” said Sean Pyun, the LPGA’s Chief Business Officer Asia. “This event is always an exciting and beautiful week on the LPGA Tour and we are happy to bring Hoakalei into the LPGA family as a host venue.”
Hoakalei Golf Club was designed by former World No. 1 and four-time major champion Ernie Els and opened in 2009. The course was built on a former sugar plantation and is located adjacent to the former Naval Air Station Barbers Point. According to Els, he considered the local trade winds when designing the layout, meaning that the course will play very differently according to which way the winds blow.
The name Hoakalei, which means "reflection of a lei," is derived a Hawaiian legend about the volcano goddess Pele, who traveled across the islands with her sister Hi'iaka in search of her lover Lohiau.
“On behalf of Hoakalei Country Club and our valued members, we are honored to host the 2022 LOTTE Championship here at our course, especially as LOTTE celebrates its 10th anniversary as title sponsor of this prestigious LPGA tournament. We look forward to a great event at the club and are thrilled to be a part of it. We believe that it will be great for golf and the State of Hawaii,” said Ken Terao, Executive Director and General Manager, Hoakalei Country Club.
The LOTTE Championship was previously played at Ko Olina Golf Club (2012-2019) and Kapolei Golf Club (2021). In 2021, Lydia Ko took the title with a dominant seven-stroke victory over Sei Young Kim, Nelly Korda, Leona Maguire and Inbee Park. It was Ko’s first victory in more than three years and kicked off a career resurgence that has seen her move to No. 3 in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings, her best position since June 2017.
The 2022 LOTTE Championship will be open to spectators, in alignment with local COVID-19 guidelines, with broadcast coverage on Golf Channel during all four rounds from 7-11 p.m. EST. For more information, visit www.lottechampionship.com.
