MGM Resorts International is pleased to host the Bank of Hope LPGA Match-Play at Shadow Creek for the second consecutive year.
In addition to giving guests a world-class golf experience, MGM Resorts strives to be a global leader in the fight against climate change, which at a lush oasis like Shadow Creek means working to protect the planet through operating water-efficient facilities, reducing consumptive water use and diverting waste material from landfills.
Half of the water used at Shadow Creek is well water, significantly lessening overall reliance on city resources and the course has a robust strategy for water conservation. Drip irrigation was placed on all trees to limit overhead irrigation sprinkler usage, reducing water usage in low-maintenance areas by 30 percent. Soil surfactants help to retain water in the soil and soil sensors monitor moisture to help avoid overwatering. Weather stations provide real-time weather data for the golf course, ensuring smart, data-based water requirement decisions.
"Here in the desert, we recognize the importance of water as a critical resource and work to ensure that we do our part to drive down consumptive use,” said Yalmaz Siddiqui, Vice President of Corporate Sustainability for MGM Resorts International. “This commitment extends to our Strip properties, where we converted 200,000 square feet of real grass into turf or desert landscape, resulting in a 25% reduction in water use over the past decade, despite increased occupancies.”
As well as these water conservation efforts, all on-site green waste at Shadow Creek is converted to compost, a nutrient-rich soil amendment, which is then marketed and sold for reuse to landscapers, golf courses, farmers and residential customers
MGM Resorts’ commitment to environmental sustainability extends beyond the immaculate greens of Shadow Creek. The company’s platform, “Focused on What Matters: Embracing Humanity and Protecting the Planet”, outlines its commitment to environmental stewardship and improving the lives of employees, guests and the communities in which hotels operate. As part of its commitment to protecting the planet, MGM Resorts has adopted a culture of innovation to ensure their operations are environmentally sustainable.
“We strive to lead our industry in responding to climate change,” said Siddiqui. “Our approach is informed by an understanding of climate science and is based on a detailed climate impact, risk and opportunity assessment.”
The North Las Vegas Mega Solar Array is the hospitality industry’s largest renewable electricity project worldwide, producing 90% of the daytime power at MGM Resorts Strip properties and close to 30% of the company’s annual electricity demand in the region. Other notable efforts include diverting more than 30 materials from landfills, a lighting retrofit project that added 1.4 million energy-efficient LED lights at 20 properties and the implementation of a food waste diversion program.
MGM Resorts International is proud to be a leading global entertainment company with 32 unique hotel destinations and gaming offerings that, like Shadow Creek, are always grounded in the principles of embracing humanity, protecting the planet and achieving ambitious goals that will have an enduring impact on the world.
