BELLEAIR, FLORIDA | With all the end-of-season awards still waiting to be clinched and entry to the CME Group Tour Championship still open, a lot is on the line at the Pelican Women’s Championship. The penultimate event of the 2022 schedule has attracted a host of LPGA stars looking to make a move before the season ends.
The tournament field is headlined by the return of Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings No. 2 Jin Young Ko and No. 3 Lydia Ko after both skipped the TOTO Japan Classic. Though No. 3 in the Rolex rankings, Lydia leads the Race to CME Globe and the Rolex Player of the Year race. No. 6 Brooke Henderson, with two wins in 2022 including a major, is also in the field. Henderson closely follows Lydia in the player of the year race and could make a move to overtake the Kiwi this weekend.
Defending champion and LPGA superstar Nelly Korda, who has yet to capture a win in 2022, is also returning to the Pelican Golf Club. Korda won the title last year in a four-way play-off against Lydia, Lexi Thompson and 2020 champion Sei-Young Kim. All three runners-up will join Korda in Belleair.
Play will begin on Thursday.
