A second-round, 7-under 65 propelled Thailand’s Wichanee Meechai up the leaderboard and into contention on Friday at the Trust Golf Women’s Scottish Open. The Rolex Rankings No. 133 made one bogey and eight birdies, with two coming back-to-back on Nos. 2 and 3 along with two in her closing holes. It’s just the third time in her LPGA Tour career that Meechai has shot 65 or better – she carded a 63 at the 2017 Meijer LPGA Classic and a 65 at the 2018 Dana Open presented by Marathon – and it’s helped the 29-year-old to take a share of fourth ahead of the weekend in Ayrshire.
“Today, just all the club selection. I had a lot of great decisions with my caddie, which is great,” said Meechai, who hit eight of 14 fairways and 17 of 18 greens. “I hit it so close and then made the putt. It's just all about the approach shots, that I hit it so close today, that's it. And then the tee shots, you just have to hit it in the fairway. I had a good commitment today.”
This is Meechai’s fifth appearance in the Scottish Open, playing on a sponsor’s exemption this week. In her four previous appearances, she’s had two top-20s and two missed cuts. She’s played in 15 other events this season, missing five cuts and notching one top-10, a tie for 10th that came at the Dow Great Bay Lakes Invitational two weeks ago. As she looks to the weekend and the challenging conditions that lie ahead, Meechai hopes to add to that top-10 count this weekend in Scotland, a place that surprisingly has good vibes for the Thailand native.
“It would mean a lot (to finish at the top of the leaderboard),” she said. “I want to thank Trust Golf for giving me a chance to play this tournament, and then I'll do my best. Just stick with the same thing. Hit it in the fairway and then be patient all day.”
