Two-time Solheim Cup participant Megan Khang has clinched a spot on the 2023 United States Solheim Cup Team. The 25-year-old was a member of the 2019 and 2021 U.S. Teams and has a 1-3-2 record in her two previous appearances. Once again set to represent her country in September at Finca Cortesin in Andalucia, Spain, Khang is looking forward to donning the Red, White and Blue and working to bring the coveted Solheim Cup back to the United States for the first time since 2017.
“It’s always a huge honor to be representing your country and to be able to do that at the Solheim Cup is truly amazing. I can’t wait to get out there to represent the Red, White, and Blue,” said Khang. “It’s not a secret that we’ve lost the past two Solheim Cups so if that’s not motivation enough, I don’t know what is. With these next two Solheim Cups going back-to-back, there’s nothing more that I would love than to win the Solheim Cup on foreign soil and bring it back to the USA. It’s safe to say that we’re all motivated and we’re all hungry and eager to get the Solheim Cup back.”
The Massachusetts native has recorded 10 top-10 results and four additional top 15s during the qualifying period, which began following the 2021 Solheim Cup. The best of her top-10 finishes is a solo second at the 2022 Dana Open when Khang lost to Gaby Lopez by one shot after carding a 7-under 64 in the final round. Three of those results were earned in three of this season’s major championships as Khang finished in a tie for ninth at The Chevron Championship, a tie for third at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship and a tie for ninth at the Amundi Evian Championship. Across the five 2023 majors, Khang averaged 2.11 strokes gained, third-best among qualified players.
United States Solheim Cup captain Stacy Lewis has taken notice of Khang’s stellar play the past two seasons and knows that she will bring a lot to the table when it comes to competing on one of the biggest stages in women’s professional golf. But Lewis also thinks that the upbeat attitude and fun energy that Khang is known for will be a true asset when it comes to the atmosphere in the team room, especially when it comes to the rookies.
“Megan has played some really good golf this year, especially in the majors,” Lewis said. “Statistically, she’s in the top three in strokes gained in major championships this year, so obviously she’s playing well on hard golf courses, playing well on bigger stages, which is important for Solheim Cup. Then you throw in her personality, she’s going to bring some energy to the team room, a looseness to the team room. She’s a ton of fun to be around. Definitely someone that will keep the rookies loose and keep everyone loose for the week.”
Khang plans to do exactly that, even though it’s a strange thing for the 25-year-old to call herself a veteran of the biennial team competition. “Being on the past two Solheim Cups definitely taught me that the team room is where the bonds get even stronger and where we can truly get to know one another and trust each other,” she said. I’d say this is truly the one week where we are in a team environment, and you can look around that team room and know that each and everyone in there has each other’s backs for the good and the bad.
“It’s crazy to think that I’m a veteran on the team but I’m just going to try and be there as a teammate and be there for anyone who has any questions or who wants a pump up. Overall I think all the veterans on the team are going to be there for everyone no matter if it’s your first or your 100th Solheim Cup. We’re all going to be there for one another.”
Khang is happy to be playing under Lewis, who was a non-playing assistant captain for the 2021 United States Solheim Cup team and who she was supposed to play alongside in 2019 until Lewis withdrew from that year’s competition with a back injury. As a major champion, a former No. 1 in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings and a 13-time LPGA Tour winner, Lewis is someone that many American players have looked to emulate throughout their tenues on the LPGA Tour and someone whom Khang is honored to play for in her third Solheim Cup appearance.
“I’m so excited to play for Stacy. She’s been awesome leading up to Solheim and has been great even when I first came on Tour,” said Khang. “She has been very clear with us and has always said that if we have any questions to not hesitate to call or text and I think that the communication has been huge. I think that she’s already done a great job and I can’t wait to play under her captaincy.”
