GAINESVILLE, Va. — The 19th edition of the Solheim Cup is being held this week at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Va. The biennial team competition features three different formats of match-play that will be contested across Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Foursomes and four-ball matches will be played on days one and two, while 12 singles matches on the final day of play will decide which team will take home the trophy.

Foursomes

Foursomes is most commonly referred to as alternate shot. In this format, two players competing as a team will alternate hitting shots until the ball is holed. For example, one player will hit their tee shot on the first hole, and player two will hit the second shot. The two players will then alternate hitting shots for as long as it takes to complete a hole. The team with the lower score will win each hole. One point will be awarded for a match victory, a half point will be awarded for a tie and no points will be awarded for a loss.

Four-ball

Four-ball is often referred to as better ball or best ball. In this format, each player on a two-person team will play their own ball on each hole until the hole is completed. The team will then take the better of those two scores as their team score, and the team with the lower score will win each hole. Like foursomes, one point will be awarded for a match victory, a half point will be awarded for a tie and no points will be awarded for a loss.
