GAINESVILLE, Va. — The U.S. led Europe 6-2 after the conclusion of Friday play at the 2024 Solheim Cup, and the Blue and Yellow will be working to make up that four-point deficit on day two at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club. The second session of foursomes matches is on deck for Saturday morning and will see the return of winning duos Allisen Corpuz and Nelly Korda, as well as Sarah Schmelzel and Lilia Vu for the Americans, while the Euros have switched things up a bit in a couple of their matchups.

Take a deeper look at just one of the foursomes matches that will be contested on Saturday in Gainesville, Va.:

Match 12, 7:41 a.m. – Anna Nordqvist/Celine Boutier vs. Lilia Vu/Sarah Schmelzel

Anna Nordqvist and Celine Boutier will play their first match together for Team Europe on day two in the foursomes session and will be taking on the winning combination of Sarah Schmelzel and Lilia Vu early in the day at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club.

This is Nordqvist’s ninth Solheim Cup appearance, as the Swede has teed it up in the 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2021 and 2023 editions of the biennial team competition, and this is the second consecutive year that she has competed as a playing vice captain. The 37-year-old had earned 16.5 points ahead of this week in Virginia and picked up another point on Friday alongside her playing partner Madelene Sagstrom when the pair took down Americans Alison Lee and Lexi Thompson 6 and 5 in the afternoon four-ball session. On the LPGA Tour this season, Nordqvist has collected six top-25 finishes, the best of which are two T12 results that came at the Cognizant Founders Cup and the Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give. She has earned one top-15 finish on the Ladies European Tour, tying for 14th at the Aramco Team Series – London.

Boutier is playing in her fourth Solheim Cup, having competed in the 2019, 2021 and 2023 Cups in both Europe and the United States. With a 5-4-1 record, the Frenchwoman has earned 5.5 points in her three starts donning the Blue and Yellow. The 30-year-old doesn’t seem to favor one format over the other, earning 2.5 points in foursomes, 2 points in singles and 1 point in four-ball, making the six-time LPGA Tour winner a consistently steady presence for the European Team, even despite the fact that she lost her foursomes match on Friday alongside Albane Valenzuela, something she will be looking to rectify during the Saturday morning session. Boutier has collected nine top-25 results this year on the LPGA Tour, one of which is a runner-up showing that came at the HSBC Women’s World Championship in Singapore and two of which have come in co-sanctioned events with the LET. Boutier tied for 22nd at the AIG Women’s Open and tied for 25th at the ISPS Handa Women’s Scottish Open last month.

Vu earned her second full point for the Americans on Friday alongside Schmelzel in the foursomes matches, bringing her career record to 2-3-0. This is her second time teeing it up in the Solheim Cup, as the five-time Tour winner also competed for the Americans at the 2023 edition of the event at Finca Cortesin. Her day-one victory was Vu’s first foursomes win in the Solheim Cup, and the California native will be working to recreate that magic with Schmelzel in the final match of Saturday’s morning session. Even though she had to take a two-month hiatus to rehab a lingering back injury in 2024, the two-time major champion has still been a force to be reckoned with on the LPGA Tour this season, picking up her fifth career title at the Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give in her first start back since her extended break and earning three other top-10 results, two of which were T2 performances that came at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship and the AIG Women’s Open at St Andrews.

Schmelzel went 2-0 on Friday in the first two sessions, earning one point in foursomes alongside Vu and one point in four-ball with her fellow rookie Lauren Coughlin. It was an impressive early showing from the 30-year-old who is competing in her first Solheim Cup and momentum that she will hope to continue riding on day two at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club. Although she has yet to become a Rolex First-Time Winner, Schmelzel has collected a whopping seven top-10 finishes in 21 total starts this season on the LPGA Tour. Four of those results came consecutively at the HSBC Women’s World Championship (T8), Blue Bay LPGA (2), FIR HILLS SERI PAK Championship (T8) and the Ford Championship presented by KCC (T8), the last of which was played in Gilbert, Ariz., not too far from Schmelzel’s native Phoenix.
