It was a tale of two rounds for LPGA Tour rookie Miranda Wang over the first two days of the inaugural MEXICO Riviera Maya Open at Mayakoba.

The first day in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, was tough, with the scoring average for the day coming in at 75.162, three strokes over par. Wang fell victim to the conditions in round one, posting a 2-over 74, which still put her above the field average but left her six shots behind the leaders.

Round two was a completely different day for the 2024 Epson Tour graduate. Wang went off early both in terms of the tee times and on her scorecard. Playing in the fourth group of the day off No. 10, Wang made three birdies in her first five holes to get to red numbers for the first time all week. As the round went on, she chipped away at par El Camaleón Golf Course, making one more birdie on the par-5 18th hole before making the turn.

The second nine was more of the same for the rookie, who made a birdie on hole two and then rolled in back-to-back birdies on five and six. Those would be the last circles on her scorecard for the day, but maybe more importantly, there were no squares to be found as Wang made it through the day bogey-free.

“Today I had a good day on the golf course,” said Wang after her second round. “Yesterday, my driver wasn't hitting really good, so I spent a little time on the driving range yesterday. I found my swing on the tee box, and on the fairway, I was hitting really good.”

The round matches her lowest score of the season, with her first 65 coming in the first round at the JM Eagle LA Championship presented by Plastpro last month.

“I think I've had a 7-under before, so this is my second 65,” said Wang. “It's a pretty solid beginning for me on the LPGA. I'm happy with that.”

The People’s Republic of China native spent two seasons on the Epson Tour before earning LPGA Tour membership through the Race for the Card, finishing No. 14 in season-long points standings in 2024. During her time on the Official Qualifying Tour of the LPGA, Wang found the winner’s circle one time at the 2023 IOA Championship presented by Morongo Casino Resort and Spa and added an additional nine top-10 finishes to her resume.

Since the beginning of 2024, she has only missed two cuts between the Epson and LPGA Tours. After starting her LPGA Tour career with now six straight made cuts, her last missed cut came on the Epson Tour in 2024 at the Tuscaloosa Toyota Classic.

“I'm definitely happy with where I am right now. But it's only halfway through,” explained Wang. “I want to hit every shot and do my best on every shot coming up.”

The 2025 campaign for Wang has had its ups and downs despite making it to the weekend at every tournament, with good rounds being canceled out with bad rounds. She has only finished inside the top 25 one time this season, with a T8 result at the Blue Bay LPGA, but sits in the driver’s seat early after round two at the MEXICO Riveria Maya Open at Mayakoba in a tie for second at 5-under overall.
