Lindy Duncan got back to the basics of her game with her swing coach Sean Foley, and it earned her a fifth top-10 finish of the season at the Buick LPGA Shanghai.

“I played really well,” Duncan said after her bogey-free final round. “I hit the ball good today. Probably one of my better ball-striking rounds probably of the year.”

The LPGA journeywoman carded rounds of 70-68 over the final two days at Qizhong Garden Golf Club to threaten the lead for the first time since her runner-up finish at The Chevron Championship in April.

Duncan says that over the months that ensued following her spectacular performance in Texas, she got away from some of the fundamentals that she and her coach had been working on, getting too open with her club head on her takeaway, and then feeling like she had to make exaggerated moves on her downswing to try and correct her club position.

“The move that I make is kind of like an over-the-top, like get quick and pull with my arms,” Duncan explained. “Just really thinking about keeping the face in a stronger position, which allows me to then clear my body out of the way that we want. And then my body felt good and able to make that move, so it was kind of just give it time at the top and then keep that face in the strong position.”

Duncan has been known to dabble with a variety of different golf gadgets throughout her career, but it was really a simple swing thought she established with Foley that paid off for Duncan in Shanghai. Over the course of the four days, Duncan missed only nine fairways and found 83 percent of her greens in regulation.

“I hit driver great. Hit in really good proximity to the hole,” Duncan said about her game. “Unfortunately, I didn't drop as many putts as I would've liked to for a really high finish or to maybe challenge, but it was still a really good day.

It was her putter that kept her from that result she was seeking or perhaps even that first win, as the 34-year-old finished the weekend eight strokes out of the playoff between Minami Katsu and eventual champion Jeeno Thitikul.

“It's really cool because I'm pretty old compared to everybody else,” Duncan said. “Try to stay in good shape and still love it, you can play for a long time, and I'm really fortunate that I've been able to do that because I love it.”

Duncan has plenty to take away from the top finish in Shanghai, and as the Tour rolls into its second stop of its fall swing through Asia, so too does Duncan, who will tee it up next week at the BMW Ladies Championship in the Republic of Korea.

“It’s insane. The players are just absolute animals, and they are so good and hit it so far and such great putters,” Duncan said about the young talent taking over the Tour. “It's really fun to be in the mix because I feel like my game has really improved to get to that level. I think the LPGA is just so competitive and so amazing, so it's great to be here.”
