The first edition of the MEXICO Riviera Maya Open at Mayakoba is on tap this week for the LPGA Tour, with the world’s premier women’s golf circuit competing at the El Camaleón Course at Fairmont Mayakoba Resort. Eight players from Mexico are set to compete, including LPGA Tour winner Gaby Lopez, Pachuca native Maria Fassi and Epson Tour champion Isabella Fierro, as are four players currently sitting inside the top 25 of the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings, the most notable of whom are No. 15 Charley Hull and two-time LPGA Tour champion Rio Takeda.

Thursday, 7:55 a.m./Friday, 12:55 p.m.* – Gaby Lopez/Charley Hull/Akie Iwai

Currently sitting at 59th in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings, Gaby Lopez is the highest-ranked player from Mexico in the field at the inaugural MEXICO Riviera Maya Open at Mayakoba and is making her 10th start of the 2025 LPGA Tour season this week in her home country. In her nine previous tournaments, the three-time LPGA Tour winner has played some pretty solid golf, earning three consecutive top-10 finishes earlier this year at the HSBC Women’s World Championship, where she tied for fourth; the Blue Bay LPGA, where she tied for eighth; and the Ford Championship presented by Wild Horse Pass, where she tied for sixth. Lopez has earned one additional top-20 result this season, a tie for 17th that she recorded at the T-Mobile Match Play presented by MGM Rewards in Las Vegas. According to data provided by KPMG Performance Insights, Lopez is currently ranked inside the top 25 of three strokes gained categories, sitting at fourth in strokes gained off the tee (0.79), 14th in strokes gained tee to green (+1.39) and 24th in strokes gained approach (+0.58). She is also third in par-4 scoring average (3.93) and 16th in average driving distance (277.36 yards). Lopez played in four previous editions of Lorena Ochoa’s event that was held in Mexico from 2008 to 2017, earning a best finish of T15 in 2016 as an LPGA Tour rookie at Club de Golf Mexico in Mexico City.

Englishwoman Charley Hull is currently sitting at 15th in the Rolex Rankings and is the top-ranked player competing this week in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. The two-time LPGA Tour winner is making her seventh start of the year at the MEXICO Riviera Maya Open at Mayakoba, and in her six events prior to this tournament, the 29-year-old has collected three top-20 results – a tie for 19th that came at the Founders Cup presented by U.S. Virgin Islands, a tie for fourth she earned at the HSBC Women’s World Championship in Singapore and a tie for 11th she posted at the Ford Championship presented by Wild Horse Pass. She has only made one LPGA Tour start in Mexico since joining the organization in 2015, tying for ninth at the Citibankamex Lorena Ochoa Match Play in 2017. Statistically, Hull is one of the strongest players on the LPGA Tour in terms of her performance off the tee, as, looking at KPMG Performance Insights data, 26.3 percent of her total rounds since 2022 have seen her gain one or more strokes off the tee, compared to the Tour average of 12.6 percent in that same metric. So far in 2025, Hull is ranked 13th in strokes gained off the tee (+0.60) and 19th in strokes gained total (+1.39), additionally ranking 27th in strokes gained tee to green (+0.88). She is also tied for second in par-5 scoring (4.50), seventh in bogey avoidance (10.8 percent), ninth in birdie to bogey ratio (2.14), 10th in scoring average (69.78) and 12th in ball-striking. Hull is averaging 277.17 yards off the tee (17) and is hitting the green in regulation 74.69 percent (15) of the time with her approach shots.

Japanese rookie Akie Iwai is teeing it up for a seventh time during her inaugural season this week in Mexico after having a pretty up-and-down year thus far on the LPGA Tour. The 22-year-old, whose twin sister Chisato is also a 2025 rookie, has earned two runner-up showings at the Honda LPGA Thailand, where she finished second to Angel Yin after posting a four-round total of 27-under, and at the JM Eagle LA Championship presented by Plastpro, where she came second to Epson Tour graduate Ingrid Lindblad at El Caballero Country Club. But she has missed three cuts and tied for 44th twice in the five other starts she has made in 2025, a season-long performance that has her currently sitting at 35th in the Race to the CME Globe and ranking 23rd in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings. The successes the young talent has had can be largely attributed to her ball-striking, as, according to KPMG Performance Insights, Iwai is fifth in strokes gained approach per round (+1.13), fifth in greens in regulation percentage (77.3 percent) and 10th in proximity to the hole (23 feet 9 inches). From 100 to 125 yards, Iwai hits the ball to 18 feet 9 inches on average, a wedge and short iron performance that is substantially better than her LPGA Tour counterparts, who average 22 feet from that distance. She additionally ranks inside the top 25 in birdie or better average (5, 4.59), birdie or better percentage (5, 25.51 percent), birdie percentage (7, 24.49 percent), scoring average (11, 69.82), strokes gained tee to green (12, +1.41) and strokes gained total (21, +1.35).

Thursday, 8:06 a.m./Friday, 1:06 p.m.* – Linn Grant/Sei Young Kim/Lindy Duncan

Linn Grant will be working to find the top 10 on the LPGA Tour for the first time since finishing third at the season-opening Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions when she tees it up in Mexico this week, having missed the cut in her last four starts on the LPGA Tour. It’s a slump like we’ve never seen from the 25-year-old Swede since she joined the LPGA in 2022, but Grant has a good opportunity to right the ship at the MEXICO Riviera Maya Open at Mayakoba with the U.S. Women’s Open at Erin Hills looming large next week. Despite her recent woes, the 2023 Dana Open champion and two-time European Solheim Cup Team member is still hitting the ball pretty well, currently ranking seventh in ball striking (29), 17th in greens in regulation (74.44 percent) and 25th in strokes gained off the tee (+0.45). Additionally, looking at data provided by KPMG Performance Insights, Grant is ranked second in percentage of rounds with one or more strokes gained off the tee over the last four seasons on the LPGA Tour, picking up at least one stroke per round in 46.5 percent her rounds played in that span. She is second only to Rolex Rankings No. 1 Nelly Korda in that metric.

Twelve-time Tour winner Sei Young Kim won the last LPGA Tour event to be held in Mexico, capturing the Citibankamex Lorena Ochoa Match Play back in 2017, what was her sixth career victory on the LPGA Tour at that time. In the years since that win, she has earned six additional victories, one of which was a major championship, as Kim collected her first major title at the 2020 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship that was held at Aronimink Golf Club in Pennsylvania. The 32-year-old is making her seventh start of the 2025 LPGA Tour season, and even though she missed the cut in her last start at the Mizuho Americas Open, Kim has had a pretty steady year thus far, earning three top-25 finishes at the Ford Championship presented by Wild Horse Pass (T22), the T-Mobile Match Play presented by MGM Rewards (T9) and The Chevron Championship (T24) in her six previous tournaments. Statistically, Kim is ranked inside the top 20 of several categories, including par-3 scoring (T6, 2.90), par-5 scoring (T8, 4.53), birdie or better percentage (18, 23.77 percent) and birdie or better average per round (18, 4.28). Along with her victory in 2017, Kim played in one other edition of the Lorena Ochoa Invitational back in 2015 and finished solo third that year at Club de Golf Mexico.

Lindy Duncan has been playing some incredibly solid golf thus far in 2025, earning four T12 or better results in her seven starts ahead of this week’s MEXICO Riviera Maya Open at Mayakoba. After missing the cut at the Founders Cup presented by U.S. Virgin Islands, the 34-year-old tied for 12th at the Blue Bay LPGA in the People’s Republic of China and then backed that up with a solo fifth showing at the Ford Championship presented by Wild Horse Pass. She missed her second cut of the year at the JM Eagle LA Championship presented by Plastpro, but Duncan recovered in spectacular fashion by tying for second at The Chevron Championship after falling in a five-way playoff to eventual champion Mao Saigo. She then tied for 36th in the inaugural Black Desert Championship presented by Greater Zion and picked up her fourth top 15 of the year at the Mizuho Americas Open at Liberty National Golf Club, where Duncan ultimately finished in a tie for 11th. She is currently 19th in the Race to the CME Globe and 50th in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings, solid positions in which to be with the season nearly halfway finished. This will be her first time competing in an LPGA Tour event in Mexico, and considering those recent results and her season-long statistical performances, Duncan very well could be a contender at El Camaleón Golf Course this week. According to KPMG Performance Insights, she is ranked inside the top 30 in three strokes gained categories, including strokes gained total (7, +1.88), strokes gained putting (9, +1.13) and strokes gained off the tee (28, +0.43). She is also tied for 14th in scoring average (69.96), tied for 15th in par-4 scoring (3.97), tied for 19th in birdie to bogey ratio (1.92) and 20th in average driving distance (275.63 yards).

Thursday, 12:55 p.m.*/Friday, 7:55 a.m. – Rio Takeda/Alexa Pano/Jasmine Suwannapura

Rio Takeda collected her second career LPGA Tour title at the Blue Bay LPGA in the People’s Republic of China earlier this season and will be working to add another solid finish to her rookie resume this week at the MEXICO Riviera Maya Open at Mayakoba. In addition to her second career victory, Takeda has racked up five additional T11 or better results on the LPGA Tour this season, two of which have come in her last two starts at the Black Desert Championship presented by Greater Zion, where Takeda came in fifth, and the Mizuho Americas Open, where the 22-year-old tied for eighth. According to KPMG Performance Insights, in her last 11 LPGA Tour starts, which includes her win as a non-member at the 2024 TOTO Japan Classic, the Japan native boasts a 69.50 scoring average, has a combined score of 100-under par and is gaining 1.98 strokes total on her competitors. She is leading the LPGA Tour both in bogey avoidance (9.2 percent) and most rounds with 1.5 or more strokes gained approach (18), also ranking in the top 15 in strokes gained tee to green (3, +2.01), strokes gained approach (5, +1.17), strokes gained total (6, +1.97) and strokes gained off the tee (+0.57). Takeda is also first in sub-par rounds (30), first in rounds in the 60s (20) and leads the Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year race, having earned 472 points in 10 starts ahead of this week’s tournament in Mexico.

Alexa Pano is making her 11th start of the 2025 LPGA Tour season at El Camaleón Golf Course in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. In her 10 tournament appearances ahead of this week, she hasn’t finished any better than the T26 that she recorded in her most recent event at the Mizuho Americas Open at Liberty National Golf Club, something the 20-year-old will be working to rectify at the MEXICO Riviera Maya Open at Mayakoba. Despite lacking top-10 finishes, Pano is ranked first in strokes gained off the tee on the LPGA Tour this season, looking at data provided by KPMG Performance Insights, and is also gaining strokes from tee to green. She became a Rolex First-Time Winner at the ISPS Handa World Invitational back in 2023 and is hoping to once again find the winner’s circle sooner rather than later on the LPGA Tour.

The MEXICO Riviera Maya Open at Mayakoba will mark Thailand native Jasmine Suwannapura’s 11th tournament of the year, and she is still trying to find the top 10 on an LPGA Tour leaderboard for the first time in 2025. The three-time Tour winner’s best finish thus far is a tie for 27th that she recorded at the Black Desert Championship presented by Greater Zion in Ivins, Utah, and that’s something she will work to improve upon at El Camaleón Golf Course. The 32-year-old is only gaining strokes with her short game this year, currently ranking 55th in strokes gained around the green (+0.06), looking at KPMG Performance Insights data, but Suwannapura is sixth on Tour in driving accuracy percentage (81.43 percent), what is one of few statistical highlights on her LPGA resume this year.
