A star-studded field is poised to compete in the 51st playing of the CPKC Women’s Open in Canada. A field of 156 of the game’s top players, including six of the top 10 in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings, are teeing it up in the Great White North for a chance to take home a piece of the $2.75 million purse. Here’s a closer look at what you need to know about this week’s LPGA Tour stop.

A New Venue

Located just minutes from downtown Toronto, Mississaugua Golf and Country Club will host the CPKC Women’s Open for the very first time this week. The championship’s return to Ontario will be the first time the LPGA Tour has played in the province since 2022. Designed by George Cumming, the course opened in 1906, and throughout its long history, the venue has hosted the RBC Canadian Open six times between 1931 and 1974, with notable winners such as Walter Hagen and Sam Snead hoisting trophies at Mississaugua. This week, the course will play to a par 71 at 6,661 yards.

Not Totally Unfamiliar

In 2016, 48 of the top juniors from across the globe competed in the World Junior Girls Championship at Mississaugua Golf and Country Club. A handful of players who competed in that championship are back in the field again this year, including three-time LPGA Tour winner Haeran Ryu, reigning U.S. Women’s Open champion Maja Stark, Olympic silver medalist Esther Henseleit and two-time U.S. Women’s Open champion Yuka Saso, who was victorious at Mississaugua back in 2016. Saso, who played under the Philippines flag at the time, also led her country to victory in the team competition. She returns to Mississaugua searching for the magic she found there as a young girl, as Saso has missed the cut in seven of her last nine starts on the LPGA Tour.

The Field

Canada’s own Brooke Henderson leads a contingent of 13 Canadians in the field at the CPKC Women’s Open. Henderson is a 13-time winner on the LPGA Tour and owns the title of being the winningest golfer in the country’s history, male or female. Henderson etched her name in the record books when she won the CPKC Women’s Open in 2018 to become the first player since Jocelyne Bourassa in 1973 to win her national open. Henderson finished in a tie for 23rd last week in Portland.

The new world No. 1 Jeeno Thitikul returns to action for the first time since unseating Nelly Korda at the top of the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings after her performance at the AIG Women’s Open. Thitikul had previously held the No. 1 spot in the world for two weeks in 2022. She tied for 30th in her last start at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club in the year’s fifth and final major championship.

Korda arrives in Canada still in search of her first win of the season after racking up five top 10s through the first half of the year. Korda finished in a tie for 36th in her last tournament appearance at the AIG Women’s Open.

Lottie Woad will make her sixth LPGA start of the year when she tees it up this week in Canada, but the Englishwoman will be competing in only her third tournament since becoming a Tour member after securing status via the LPGA Elite Amateur Pathway. Woad was tied for eighth in her last start at the AIG Women’s Open to continue a blistering run of golf that has seen her win twice worldwide this summer at the KPMG Women’s Irish Open on the LET and the ISPS HANDA Women’s Scottish Open on the LPGA, the latter of which was her professional debut.

Lydia Ko, a three-time winner of the CPKC Women’s Open, will return to the Tour this week to make her first start since the AIG Women’s Open. Ko comes to Canada off a tie for 36th at Royal Porthcawl after missing back-to-back cuts at the Dow Championship and The Amundi Evian Championship.

Coughlin Defends

In her 103rd LPGA Tour start, Lauren Coughlin earned her long-awaited first win with her victory at the CPKC Women’s Open in 2024. Coughlin birdied two of her last four holes during the final round at Earl Grey Golf Club to card a final round of 71 for a two-stroke victory over Mao Saigo. Coughlin’s win became a springboard to a breakout season in which she went on to win a second time that season in Scotland and earned a spot on her first U.S. Solheim Cup Team. The 32-year-old returns to Canada fresh off of her fifth top 10 finish of the season, as she tied for seventh last week at The Standard Portland Classic.

You’re Invited

Sponsor invitations were extended to 15 players, including two Canadian veterans on the LPGA Tour, Alena Sharp and Maude-Aimee Leblanc. Several amateurs were also given invitations to compete this week at the CPKC Women’s Open including Carla Bernat Escuder, who won the Augusta National Women’s Amateur in April; Anna Davis, the winner of the Augusta National Women’s Amateur in 2022; as well as Megha Ganne, the newly minted U.S. Women’s Amateur champion who was victorious at Bandon Dunes.
