If everything is bigger in Texas, it doesn’t get much bigger than a major championship being contested in the Lone Star State. Come Thursday, Frisco will host its very first KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at Fields Ranch East at PGA Frisco, where the third major championship of the season will see 156 of the top-ranked players in the game compete for a $10.4 million purse. Here’s a closer look at what you need to know about the 71st edition of the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.

Amy Yang Defends

At Sahalee Country Club in 2024, Amy Yang secured her long-awaited breakthrough major title at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship. Yang had long been considered one of the best players in women’s golf who had yet to win a major championship and was able to capture a victory in her 75th major appearance. Yang won by three strokes over Jin Young Ko, Miyu Yamashita and Lilia Vu, securing her spot on the team representing the Republic of Korea at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Yang will seek to become the first athlete since Inbee Park last did so in 2015 to win the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship in back-to-back years. She arrives in Frisco in search of her first top 10 of the season and off a missed cut in her last start at the Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give.

The Field

World No. 1 Nelly Korda headlines the field at Fields Ranch East, and the 2021 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship will be working to win her third major title, as Korda also earned a major victory at The Chevron Championship in 2024. Korda finished runner-up at the season’s second major, the U.S. Women’s Open at Erin Hills, and the following week was tied for 15th at the ShopRite LPGA Classic. She did not play last week at the Meijer LPGA Classic, instead taking the week off ahead of the year’s third major championship.

Mao Saigo and Maja Stark, the first two major champions of the season, are in the field this week in Frisco, where they’ll be searching for a second 2025 title. Saigo looked poised to win back-to-back majors after capturing The Chevron Championship in April and then putting herself in contention heading into the weekend of the U.S. Women’s Open. But it was Stark who ultimately emerged victorious at Erin Hills to secure her first major title. The Swede will make just her third appearance at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship this week and look to turn the tide on her performance in this major championship, where she tied for 60th in 2024 and missed the cut in 2023. Saigo tied for seventh at last season’s KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at Sahalee.

Mimi Rhodes and Stacy Lewis were the recipients of the two sponsor exemptions provided for the 2025 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship. Rhodes has had a hot start to her young career with three victories this season on the Ladies European Tour, where she currently leads the Order of Merit. Lewis, a two-time major champion and former Rolex Rankings No. 1 who has a partnership with KPMG, also received an invitation to compete. Lewis is a Texas resident who has played every KPMG Women’s PGA Championship since 2009.

The Course

Fields Ranch East at PGA Frisco is hosting the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship for the first time this week and is one of two 18-hole courses on the property. The course was designed by Gil Hanse and hosted its first major in 2023 – the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship won by Steve Stricker, who described the course as having some difficult pins, some easy pins, crusty greens, and at times, some tricky wind. Fields Ranch East features rolling hills, some of the largest greens the LPGA Tour has seen this season, along with subtle slopes and false edges. The course will play to a par 72, and the yardage can range anywhere from 5,012 to 7,863 yards.

Tournament History

For the first time, the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship will be held in the state of Texas. It’s a new chapter in the major’s long history, which dates back to 1955, won in its first year by Beverly Hanson. Formerly known as the LPGA Championship, the major has crowned some of the most notable champions in the game, including Mickey Wright, the only four-time winner of the event in 1958, 1960, 1961, and 1963. There are 12 past champions who in the field this week in Frisco, including defending champion Yang, Ruoning Yin (2023), In Gee Chun (2022), Nelly Korda (2021), Sei Young Kim (2020), Hannah Green (2019), Sung Hyun Park (2018), Danielle Kang (2017), Brooke Henderson (2016), Yani Tseng (2011, 2008), Cristie Kerr (2010), and Anna Nordqvist (2009).

A Unique Field

The KPMG Women’s PGA Championship features one of the more unique fields of the five major championships in that each year, the field also includes the Corebridge Financial Team, which is made up of 10 PGA and LPGA Teaching Professionals. This year that includes Heather Angell, Sandra Changkija, Joanna Coe, Dr. Alison Curdt, Nicole Felce, Ashley Grier, Allie Knight, Katelyn Sepmoree, Natalie Vivaldi and Allie White. Each of these individuals qualified for this week’s major championship through the 2024 LPGA Professionals Championship and PGA Women’s Stroke Play Championship.
