The LPGA Tour heads from the oldest major championship in the women’s game to one of the longest-running regular LPGA Tour stops – the ShopRite LPGA Classic presented by Acer. The 54-hole event gets underway on Friday just outside of Atlantic City, N.J., where 144 of the top-ranked players in the world will compete for a $1.75 million purse at the Bay Course at Seaview. Here’s a closer look at what you need to know about this week’s event on Tour.

Linnea Strom Defends

After making the cut on the number last year, Linnea Strom came into the final round of the ShopRite LPGA Classic seven strokes off the lead. The Swede then carded a 60 early on the final day to take the clubhouse lead at 14-under par and was left waiting hours to see whether it would hold up. Ultimately, that 60 was, in fact, good enough for her first win on the LPGA Tour and saw Strom mount the largest comeback by position in LPGA Tour history. This week, Strom returns to New Jersey looking to ignite the same spark she found last year, as she’s missed the cut in five of her previous six starts this season.

The Field

For the first time in five years, Nelly Korda will tee it up at the ShopRite LPGA Classic, as she last competed in Atlantic City in 2020, where she finished solo fifth. Korda remains in the hunt for her first victory of the season after coming off a tie for second at the U.S. Women’s Open presented by Ally on Sunday in Wisconsin.

Korda finished just behind Maja Stark, who captured the U.S. Women’s Open at Erin Hills for her second career win on the LPGA Tour and first major title. Stark is making her tournament debut this week in New Jersey where she’ll look to keep the momentum of her major victory rolling again over the weekend.

After an uncharacteristic missed cut by Jeeno Thitikul at the U.S. Women’s Open, the Thai star is back in action again in New Jersey. And just like the consistency we’re used to seeing from Thitikul week in and week out on the LPGA Tour, she has brought that same form to the Garden State over the past couple of years, finishing in the top 10 in both 2023 (T6) and 2024 (4).

Mirim Lee will make a long-awaited return to competition this week in New Jersey. The 2020 Chevron Championship winner has been absent from women’s golf, having made her last start on the LPGA Tour at the 2023 U.S. Women’s Open at Pebble Beach Golf Links, where she missed the cut. Lee is also slated to compete next week at the Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give in Belmont, Mich.

Several other past champions are also in the field, including Ashleigh Buhai (2023), Brooke Henderson (2022), Annie Park (2018), Stacy Lewis (2014, 2012), and Brittany Lincicome (2011).

Tournament History

The ShopRite LPGA Classic is one of the oldest events on the LPGA Tour’s schedule, dating back to 1986 at the Bay Course at Seaview. The tournament took a brief hiatus from 2007 – 2009, but since being added back to the schedule in 2010, it has been a fixture ever since. Since its inception, the tournament has largely been played as a 54-hole event, and there were only two occasions in 1990 and 2020 that it was played over four days and 72 holes. The 37th edition of the ShopRite LPGA Classic begins on Friday.

Sponsor Exemptions

Asterisk Talley headlines an impressive list of players who received sponsor exemptions to compete in New Jersey. The current 16th-ranked amateur in the world missed the cut at the U.S. Women’s Open but is becoming more of a fixture week to week on the LPGA Tour, as she also competed this season at The Chevron Championship and the JM Eagle LA Championship presented by Plastpro.

The 16-year-old amateur is joined by Gianna Clemente, who also teed it up at The Chevron Championship and who has been playing well in recent weeks with top-five finishes in her last two AJGA tournaments. Ohio State University’s Kary Hollenbaugh also received an invite after she finished tied for 22nd at the Augusta National Women’s Amateur. Epson Tour member Sarah White rounds out the list of invitees for this year’s tournament.
