LPGA Tour athletes will often hit shots that make viewers stop in their tracks. But on Thursday at the DOW Championship, Megan Khang’s caddie had to stop traffic.

Khang, who is one half of Team Biggie Smalls at the LPGA Tour’s lone team event, found herself slightly out of position on No. 16 after a tee shot from Lexi Thompson was pushed to the left. Alas, Khang knew the rules and took an appropriate drop and then hit a magical recovery shot underneath a tree to the back of the green.

But she was only able to concentrate on hitting such a spectacular approach thanks to her caddie, David Taylor, who walked into the middle of the road to play traffic cop.

NBC Sports analyst Morgan Pressel called it “exceptional.”

The team made a par on the hole and finished with a tidy 3-under 67 on day one of alternate shot at Midland Country Club. They’re just one back of the first-round lead held by Gemma Dryburgh and Cassie Porter among a big group tied for second.

“I didn't put her in the best of position on some long holes, but she hit some amazing shots and hit some really great putts down the stretch especially,” Thompson said with a knowing smile.

“Honestly, playing with Lexi is a good time. I joked with Lexi I'm going to change my name to Lexi this week because we got a lot of, ‘Go, Lexi,’ and I'm like, ‘I'm here too,’” Khang added with a laugh. “No, it's super cool out there. The fans are great. I feel great feeding off that atmosphere. I put Lexi in some good putts, and she had the speed down to a T, and I didn't really have to make too many long ones.”

Khang is looking for her first LPGA Tour title since the CPKC Women’s Open in 2023, while Thompson – who announced last year she would be playing a reduced schedule moving forward – is looking to find the winner’s circle for the first time since 2019.

The duo opened with three birdies in their first nine holes, including two in a row on Nos. 17 and 18. They made bogeys on holes two and four, but sandwiched in there was another birdie on the par-5 3rd hole. They added a final circle on the scorecard on the par-4 9th hole for good measure.

“The course is in great shape. I knew coming out here for alternate shot that we just had a make to a few birdies and pars were good,” Thompson said. “Just tried to stay consistent and be patient out there.”

This is not the first time that Khang and Thompson have paired together. They own a 2-0-0 record in Foursomes at the Solheim Cup as well, with both wins coming in 2023.

“I think we owe a little bit to our former captain, Stacy Lewis, for showing us this pairing in Spain,” Khang said on Wednesday. “Clearly worked well there, so we are hoping to ride that coming into this week.”

Despite the reduced schedule for Thompson, she hasn’t really shown any signs of slowing down, results-wise at least. She has four top-15 finishes so far this season, three of which have been in her last four tournaments. She finished tied for 12th at last week’s KPMG Women’s PGA Championship after finishing tied for fourth the week prior at the Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give – her best finish on Tour in a year since she tied for second in the 2024 edition of that event.

Thompson has also put together a tidy statistical campaign and currently ranks 14th in strokes gained total and 21st in strokes gained putting, something Khang admitted she was ready to lean on this week.

Khang’s 2025 season has been steady, highlighted by a third-place result at the Founders Cup presented by U.S. Virgin Islands. She’s also one of the best ball strikers on Tour, sitting fifth in strokes gained tee to green and seventh in strokes gained approach.

The squad, firmly in the mix after the first round, now look to round two’s four-ball format as a solid opportunity to climb the leaderboard.

“I told Lexi I wasn't going to be dumb-aggressive today for her. I might get a little dumb-aggressive if it calls for it,” Khang said. “I think, overall, we played alternate shot pretty well. We kept it pretty loose out there, lots of fun. Definitely had a lot of smiles. I think we're both going to take turns giving each other the green light to go for certain shots that we probably normally wouldn't.”

Green light? Or a stop sign? Whether it’s driving on the course or on the road, Team Biggie Smalls had a great start to the Dow Championship.
