The best of the best in men’s golf are teeing it up at Oakmont Country Club for the 125th playing of the U.S. Open, and while this venue can count Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, Jack Nicklaus and Bobby Jones among its champions, there are also two women who have also hoisted trophies at Oakmont. Meet the two LPGA Tour athletes who won major championships at this historic property.

Patty Sheehan

Patty Sheehan

Sheehan won the first of her two U.S. Women’s Open titles at Oakmont after outlasting Juli Inkster in an 18-hole playoff in Plum, Pa. The victory was the third of six majors that Sheehan collected throughout her LPGA Tour career, four of which came in a five-year span from 1992 to 1996, and it was the 29th of the 35 official wins she racked up after joining the LPGA. She was the first woman to win a major event at Oakmont.

Sheehan was named the 1981 Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year and 1983 Rolex Player of the Year, earning the Vare Trophy for best season-long scoring average in 1984. She is both an LPGA and World Golf Hall of Fame member and was a member of five U.S. Solheim Cup Teams, including the first edition of the biennial team competition in 1990. She was recognized with the Patty Berg Award in 2002.

Fifteen years ago, at the 2010 U.S. Women’s Open, Paula Creamer won her first and only major title at Oakmont after finishing four strokes ahead of Na Yeon Choi and Suzann Pettersen with a four-day total of 3-under. It was a hard-fought battle for Creamer, who had dealt with injury that season, but her win in Pennsylvania was a career-defining moment for the American, who had long wondered when her time to win a major title would ultimately come.

“I've always thought of my career as I've always been a pretty solid player, but that question always lurked: How come you never won a major? And now we have, and we never get to get asked that question again,” Creamer said after her victory. “That's kind of a big relief off of my shoulders, but I knew that the time would come. I just had to be patient. Yesterday, I said these last couple of months were the most crucial months I think I've ever had to go through. They were just maturing, learning how to handle adversity, learning how to become more of an adult in a sense, and you have to really count your blessings every day.”

While the U.S. Women’s Open is her only major victory, Creamer has captured nine other LPGA Tour titles throughout her career, most recently winning the HSBC Women’s World Championship in 2014. Creamer earned Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year honors in 2005 and has been a member of seven U.S. Solheim Cup Teams, boasting a 17-9-5 record and earning 19.5 points for the Americans in her seven appearances.
