It was on May 11, 2008, that Annika Sorenstam captured her final LPGA Tour title, doing so at the Michelob ULTRA Open at Kingsmill.

She won by seven shots that week over Allison Fouch, Jeong Jang, Christina Kim and Karen Stupples after carding a four-day total of 19-under at the River Course at Kingsmill Resort and Spa in Williamsburg, Va. Sorenstam set what was then a new LPGA Tour record for lowest amount of putts over 72 holes with 96, one that was recently broken by 2025 LPGA Tour rookie and U.S. Women’s Amateur winner Saki Baba, who had only 93 putts at the 2025 Blue Bay LPGA in the People’s Republic of China.

Sorenstam retired from the LPGA Tour at the conclusion of the 2008 season, having won a whopping 72 times since capturing her first U.S. Women’s Open title in 1995 at Broadmoor Golf Club in Colorado Springs, Colo. Ten of those victories were major championships, and the Swede is one of just seven athletes who have completed the Career Grand Slam, as she won four different major tournaments that were considered as such during her career.

The LPGA and World Golf Hall of Famer remains the only player in the history of the LPGA Tour to break 60, shooting a 59 in the second round of the 2001 Standard Register PING at Moon Valley Country Club in Phoenix, Ariz. The 13 birdies that she made on that historic day are still an LPGA Tour record for most birdies in a single round.

She was an eight-time Rolex Player of the Year and was the first player to hold the No. 1 in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings when they were introduced in 2006. Sorenstam’s 72 career victories are the third-most recorded by a player in LPGA Tour history, and she only trails Tour legends Kathy Whitworth, who won 88 times and is the winningest golfer ever, and Mickey Wright, who collected 82 Tour titles.

Sorenstam has played in a few LPGA Tour events since her retirement in 2008 and set the record for the longest period between made cuts when she played the weekend at the 2021 Gainbridge LPGA that was contested at her home club, Lake Nona Golf and Country Club. It was her first made cut since the 2008 Lorena Ochoa Invitational by Banamex and Corona Light, a span that stretched 12 years, 3 months and 10 days.

She most recently competed in a professional capacity at the 2023 U.S. Women’s Open at Pebble Beach Golf Links.
