It was on September 30, 1950, that the LPGA charter was officially signed at the U.S. Women’s Open at Rolling Hills Country Club in Wichita, Kan.

The 13 founding members included Alice Bauer, Patty Berg, Bettye Danoff, Helen Dettweiler, Marlene Hagge-Vossler, Helen Hicks, Opal Hill, Betty Jameson, Sally Sessions, Marilynn Smith, Shirley Spork, Louise Suggs and Babe Didrikson Zaharias. Berg, who collected 60 titles throughout her LPGA Tour tenure, 15 of which were major championships, was elected as the organization’s first president.

The 1950 season saw 15 official events contested, beginning at the Tampa Open in January and concluding with the Hardscrabble Women’s Invitational in October. Zaharis won eight times that year and was the Tour’s leading money earner, having collected nearly $15,000 in winnings.

Comparatively, the LPGA Tour schedule in 2025 has featured over 30 official tournaments, with the world’s best athletes playing for over $130 million in prize money, an astounding amount of growth for what is consistently recognized as the oldest women’s sports organization in the world.

In 2025 alone, the Tour has seen at least one event played in 11 different countries and regions, excluding the United States, and the organization currently has two international team competitions in its rotation of events – the Solheim Cup and the Hanwha LIFEPLUS International Crown.
