Mickey Wright became the second player in LPGA Tour history to complete the Career Grand Slam on May 13, 1962, at the Women’s Western Open. She beat Mary Lena Faulk in a playoff at Montgomery Country Club in Montgomery, Ala. that year after both players finished with the same four-day total of 295 and earned a $1,200 first-place check with the victory.

Wright won with a par on the fourth extra hole to join Louise Suggs as the only other LPGA Tour athlete to finish the Career Grand Slam at that time, having won the 1958, 1960 and 1961 LPGA Championships; the 1958, 1959 and 1961 U.S. Women’s Opens; and the 1961 and 1962 Titleholders Championships.

The LPGA recognizes a player who has won four different major championships available to them in their career as a Career Grand Slammer, with a player who wins five different majors in their career as a Super Career Grand Slammer. Along with Suggs and Wright, only five other players – Pat Bradley, Juli Inkster, Karrie Webb, Annika Sorenstam and Inbee Park – have completed the Career Grand Slam. Webb is the only player in LPGA Tour history to have the Super Career Grand Slam.

The victory was the ninth major title that Wright had claimed at that point in her career and was one of 13 total major championships she won during her time as an LPGA Tour member. She went on to win two more Women’s Western Opens, successfully defending her title in 1963 and then collecting what was her last major title at the 1966 edition of the event at Rainbow Springs Country Club in Mukwonago, Wis. The Women’s Western Open was only recognized as an LPGA Tour major championship for 18 years, from 1950 to 1967.

Wright has the second-most major victories of all time, only sitting behind Patty Berg, who won 15 major championships during her LPGA Tour career, and she also has the second-most LPGA Tour wins of all time with 82, six less than Kathy Whitworth, who won 88 times from 1962 to 1985. Wright’s 82 LPGA Tour victories are tied with Sam Snead and Tiger Woods, who are both credited with having the most wins in the history of the PGA Tour at 82 a piece.
