Chizzy Iwai remains in the hunt at the JM Eagle LA Championship presented by Plastpro, carding a 4-under 68 on Friday to sit one stroke off the lead heading into the weekend.

Iwai, who opened the tournament with a blistering 9-under 63, followed up her stellar start with a consistent second round featuring five birdies. While she surrendered the outright lead she held after 18 holes, her two-day total of 13-under 131 keeps her in prime position in second place.

The Japanese standout attributed much of her success at El Caballero Country Club to her performance off the tee.

"I think driver shot, uh-huh," Iwai said. "This course important thing is tee shot. Yeah, that's why. Yeah, driver shot."

Though Iwai noted some missed opportunities on the greens during her front nine, her aggressive approach on the back nine continued to pay dividends. She noted that the course layout plays into her strengths, allowing her to use short irons to attack pins.

"I like aggressive golf," Iwai said. "That’s why. Yeah, not too long, short iron. Yeah, easy."

As the tournament moves into the final 36 holes, Iwai remains focused on her internal process rather than the leaderboard. She emphasized that maintaining her routine and a "me-against-the-course" mentality will be the key to securing the win.

"I just focus my routine and my swing," she said. "I don’t think another one. Yeah, just focus on me."

Iwai will enter Saturday's third round seeking to reclaim the top spot and capture her first title of the 2026 season.
