Hometown favorite and 2024 tournament champion Ruoning Yin rode a late surge to fire a 4-under 68 in Thursday’s opening round of the Buick LPGA Shanghai, putting her in a tie for third at Sheshan Golf Club.

She has notched seven top-10 finishes this year, including a victory at the FM Championship in August. Two of those top-10 finishes came at major championships, where she tied for second at The Chevron Championship and tied for eighth at the U.S. Women’s Open

The six-time LPGA Tour winner capped off her round with three consecutive birdies, channeling her frustration into focus.

“Those three birdies I made at the last definitely boost some confidence in me,” Yin said. “I just felt like I’ve been hitting good and just I missed two really short putts on the back nine which made me mad, so I was playing the last three holes with anger.”

Playing in front of an enthusiastic home crowd, Yin expressed gratitude for the local support as she looks ahead to the remaining three rounds.

“Overall, I think just playing in front of the home crowd, just, you know, enjoy the game is my number one goal this week,” Yin added. “T
