NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. — The chips were falling in Lauren Coughlin’s favor on day one of the Aramco Championship, which is being contested this week roughly 15 miles north of the Las Vegas Strip.

The American kicked off her week at Shadow Creek with an almost flawless 5-under 67, a first-round effort that saw Coughlin card six birdies and one bogey on the par-4 ninth hole en route to a first-round effort that has her at the top of the leaderboard early.

Starting on the par-4 10th hole, the 33-year-old landed a one-two punch of birdies right from the jump to immediately move to 2-under and then made another birdie on the par-5 16th hole to climb to 3-under. Coughlin turned in 32 after grabbing a fourth birdie on the par-5 18th hole and got to 5-under on the round when she birdied the par-4 third hole.

The two-time LPGA Tour winner notched her final Thursday birdie on the par-5 seventh hole before dropping her only shot of the round on nine, a steady opening round that leaves her tied atop of the leaderboard with Nasa Hataoka and Miyu Yamashita, marking just the fourth 18-hole lead/co-lead of Coughlin’s career.

“I played really, really steady,” said Coughlin. “I was hitting my numbers all day, and this course, if you're hitting your spots and numbers, it will give you birdies. If you miss them, it can be very, very difficult. I just did a really good job of hitting my numbers today and hitting my spots.”

Coughlin is armed with a wealth of knowledge about this property, having teed it up in three editions of the T-Mobile Match Play presented by MGM Rewards, the now-defunct LPGA Tour event that had been contested at Shadow Creek since its inception in 2021. Coughlin finished runner-up here in that tournament last season, falling in the Championship Match to Sweden’s Madelene Sagstrom after tying for 17th in 2023 and tying for 32nd in 2024.

That experience is something the Virginian heavily credited as a big reason for her early success in the firm and fast conditions that are an ever-present concern at the Aramco Championship, conditions that make the undulation in both the fairways and greens at Shadow Creek even more pronounced and even more lethal.

“I feel like I know this place really well,” said Coughlin. “(I have) been in a lot of the places that you don't want to be, so I feel like I know the spots that I need to land it to a lot of the pins, where to miss if you have to. It was nice to not play seven rounds hopefully in five days like last year.”

But finally feeling a bit more settled into a recent equipment change also helped the LPGA Tour veteran on Thursday in Sin City, particularly as it pertained to her approach shots. “I changed iron shafts at the beginning of the year,” Coughlin explained. “I've been playing the same shafts for almost six years. My swing hasn't changed a ton, but I feel like I've gotten older, and my swing has gotten more efficient, I guess I would say.

“I was testing out stuff, trying to get a little bit more height, and I also changed my lie angles. I used to be super, super flat, like three-and-a-half degrees flat, and after messing around with some wedges earlier in January, I decided to go to two degrees flat, and it's made a huge difference.”

The Aramco Championship marks Coughlin’s fourth event of the 2026 season, and so far, it’s been a lackluster start to the year for the Solheim Cupper. She has yet to crack the top 10 in the three domestic tournaments in which she has teed it up and was forced to skip the spring Asian swing due to injury. She has slipped to 32nd in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings and is 94th in the Race to the CME Globe, holding steady in the eighth position in the U.S. Solheim Cup point standings.

But after a strong opening 67 at Shadow Creek, it feels like Coughlin might have finally found a bit of form early in North Las Vegas, momentum she will hope to keep rolling over the next 54 holes as she looks to track down her first top-20 or better result on the LPGA Tour since the 2025 Standard Portland Classic.
