Ruoning Yin opened the CPKC Women’s Open with a 5-under-par 65, scoring eight birdies against three bogeys to position herself near the top of the leaderboard after Thursday’s opening round.

Yin, a five-time LPGA Tour winner, overcame pre-tournament fatigue and a lack of familiarity with half the course to post her low round of the week.

Despite only playing the front nine during her practice rounds, Yin navigated the unfamiliar back nine by leaning on sharp iron play and dedicated putting practice.

“I think today obviously I had a good start and this is my first time shooting 20s. I mean, everything works well,” Yin said. “I think I work on my putting for so long and then my long game feels good. I think right now I got all the pieces and just try to puzzle them together.”

The contrast between the two halves of the layout proved pivotal. While the shorter front nine required more tactical club selection, the back nine demanded accuracy off the tee following recent rainfall.

"Front nine, distance was a little shorter and you don't need to hit driver every hole," Yin said. "But back nine is a little bit more straightforward. But I think at this course you just make sure you're on the fairway, because on the back nine... the three bogeys I was in the rough and if you're in the rough, it's a little thick and you are going to definitely get penalized."
