HOUSTON, Texas — Nelly Korda has outpaced the field over the first three days of The Chevron Championship and currently holds a five-shot lead over major winner Patty Tavatanakit entering the final round at Memorial Park Golf Course in Houston, Texas.

The Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings No. 2 and 2024 winner of The Chevron Championship is now poised to add a third major championship to her resume, one that already includes 16 LPGA Tour victories, an Olympic gold medal and Rolex Player of the Year honors.

Opening 65s

Korda carded twin 65s on Thursday and Friday to post a 36-hole total of 7-under, the first time in her career that she had opened with two rounds of 65 or better in a major championship.

The 27-year-old is one of just four athletes since 1980 to kick off a major tournament with two rounds of 65 or better, joining a short list that only otherwise includes Pajaree Anannarukarn (65-65), who did so at the 2021 Amundi Evian Championship; Brooke Henderson (64-64), who did so en route to her 2022 victory at Evian Resort Golf Club; and Ayaka Furue (65-65), who did so in 2024 to also win the LPGA Tour’s annual event in France.

Largest Major Championship Lead

Nelly’s five-shot 54-hole lead is the largest in an LPGA major championship since the 2022 AIG Women’s Open that was contested at Muirfield in Scotland. South African Ashleigh Buhai went on to win that week in a four-hole playoff over the Republic of Korea’s In Gee Chun, what was her first career LPGA victory and first major championship title.

Fiery Flat Stick

According to golf statistician Justin Ray, Korda has made 19 of the 43 birdie putts she has looked at throughout the week at Memorial Park. That converts to 44 percent of birdie putts holed.

Sixth American With Two or More Chevron Wins

If she goes on to win her second Chevron Championship, Nelly will join a list of Americans with multiple victories at this tournament, a slate that features some of the greatest to ever play the game, including Amy Alcott (1983, 1988, 1991), Betsy King (1987, 1990, 1997), Juli Inkster (1984, 1989), Dottie Pepper (1992, 1999) and Brittany Lincicome (2009, 2015).

The only two international athletes who have won this major multiple times are Sweden’s Annika Sorenstam (2001, 2002, 2005) and Australia’s Karrie Webb (2000, 2006).

Joins Amy Alcott and Juli Inkster

With a win, Korda would be the third player in the last 50 years, alongside Amy Alcott and Juli Inkster, to win a major when leading by multiple shots after each of the first three rounds. Inkster did so at the 1989 Chevron Championship, triumphing by five shots over JoAnne Carner and Tammie Green, while Alcott won by eight shots over Dottie Pepper in 1991 at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif.

10-for-12 Conversion Rate

Also according to Justin Ray, athletes who were ahead by five or more strokes after three rounds at any given tournament in the last 15 seasons have a 10-for-12 victory conversion rate. The most recent player to convert a five-shot or better 54-hole lead is Hyo Joo Kim, who won the 2026 Fortinet Founders Cup after leading Nelly by five strokes ahead of round four at Sharon Heights Golf and Country Club in California.

Return to Rolex Rankings No. 1

Because current Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings No. 1 Jeeno Thitikul missed the cut, a victory tomorrow has Nelly projected to return to No. 1 in the world on Monday, Apr. 27 for the first time since August 2025. But Korda is also projected to move ahead of the Thai native if she finishes in a tie for second with two or fewer other athletes on Sunday at The Chevron Championship.
