Youmin Hwang of the Republic of Korea posted her third straight round in the 60s Saturday, a 4-under 68, to move into a tie for third at the TOTO Japan Classic. The 23-year-old LPGA Tour rookie sits at 13-under 203 at Taiheiyo Club Minori Course in Omitama, Ibaraki, Japan, two strokes behind leader Aki Iwai with 18 holes remaining.

Hwang started the day in a six-way tie for fifth, three strokes behind defending champion Nasa Hataoka. Iwai of Japan carded a 6-under 66 to take the lead at 15-under 201. Thailand’s Arpichaya Yubol posted the low round of the day, a 7-under 65, to move into solo second at 14-under. Hwang shares third with Japan’s Erika Hara. Hataoka shot an even-par 72 and fell into a four-way tie for fifth at 12-under, three strokes off the lead.

Starting on No. 1, Hwang opened with four straight pars before a birdie at the par-4 fifth. She bogeyed the par-4 sixth but got the stroke back with a birdie at the par-3 eighth to make the turn in 1-under 35.

Hwang birdied the par-4 10th and the par-5 12th to reach 12-under. She then birdied the par-4 15th to get to 13-under. She dropped a shot at the par-3 16th, then answered right away with a birdie at the par-5 17th. A closing par gave her an inward 33. She finished with six birdies, two bogeys and 10 pars.

Her ball-striking has kept her near the top all week. Hwang hit 16 of 18 greens in regulation Saturday and has hit 47 of 54 through three rounds. She opened with a 68 and followed with a 67 on Friday. All three of her rounds this week have been in the 60s.

This week marks Hwang’s 24th start of her rookie season. Her best finish so far came in the season opener, a T5 at the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions in January. It is still her only top-10 of the year. She also finished T12 at The Chevron Championship in April for her best major result. Her form has improved during the fall Asia swing: she closed with a 66 for a T16 at the Buick LPGA Shanghai, then shot another closing 66 to finish 20th at the Maybank Championship last week. She entered the week 53rd in the Race to the CME Globe.

Hwang joined the LPGA Tour as a winner after capturing the 2025 LOTTE Championship presented by Hoakalei as a non-member at 17-under 271, a week that included a second-round 62. She deferred her membership to 2026. The TOTO Japan Classic is her first start at this event.

Hwang will start Sunday’s final round two strokes back. She is chasing her second LPGA Tour title and her first as a Tour member.
