Hirata did not compete during the 1989 season due to the birth of her first child, Christopher, on June 8. She joined the Tour in 1979 and three years later experienced her most successful season to date. She finished the 1982 season with nearly $30,000 in earnings and had her highest ever ranking, 53rd on the money list. Hirata’s career-best finish was a tie for seventh originally posted at the 1980 Florida Lady Citrus (where she also carded her career-low round of 68) and later tied at the 1982 McDonald’s Kids Classic.

A limited amateur career did not prevent Hirata from joining the men’s golf team at Whittier College. She played there for three years and was named MVP and captain in 1977.
