Hurlbut began collecting golf trophies early, winning her first of three Southern California Golf Association tournaments at age 15 in 1974. She reached the quarter-finals of the 1977 USGA Junior Girls Championship. While at Tulsa University, she was a member of the 1980 National Championship team.
