Since being named Rookie-of-the-Year in 1962 Mary has had a very successful and consistent career on the LPGA Tour. She has won nine events, including three major championships: the U.S. Open and the LPGA Championship twice. Perhaps her best year was 1973 when she had a career high for earnings and finished sixth on the final money list. In recent years she has had a series of hand and wrist injuries that have hampered her play. In 1981 she played in 25 events for the third consecutive year and increased her earnings over 1980. Her best finish was a tie for 12th at the Golden Lights Championship.

Mary won the Mississippi State Amateur an amazing eight consecutive years starting in 1954, and won the Gulf Coast amateur twice. She was also medalist in the U.S. Junior, Western Junior and the National Collegiate Championship.
