On Monday, Renee Powell, one of the pioneers in women’s golf, hosted her 16th annual Pioneer Golf Tournament. Cheyenne Woods, Ginger Howard and Shasta Averyhardt were among the professionals who participated in Powell’s event, which benefits the Clearview Legacy Foundation.
“This woman is amazing. Truly an inspiration,” Woods posted on Instagram alongside a photo with Powell. “Thank you, Renee Powell for all you’ve done for the game of golf.”
In 1948, Powell’s family became the first African Americans in the United States to design and operate a golf course when they opened Clearview Golf Club in Canton, Ohio. The course is one of Ohio’s historic landmarks and hosted Powell’s event on Monday. In 1967, Powell became just the second African American to play on the LPGA Tour. Powell has been a role model and mentor to Woods and other African Americans who have played on the LPGA Tour, who are happy to make the trip each year to lend their support to Powell’s event.
