This week's Prudential Rock Solid Performer is Lorena Ochoa. Ochoa began the day with a one-stroke lead over rookie In-Kyung Kim. Ochoa was down three strokes heading into 18, and with an eagle on 17 and a bogey by Kim on 18, the two players headed into a two-hole, sudden-death playoff where Ochoa walked away a winner.
It took 74 holes and a perfectly timed eagle, but Lorena Ochoa walked away from the Wegmans LPGA as champion of the event for the second time in her career. Ochoa, who finished the tournament at 8-under par 280 (69-71-67-73), managed to get her first-ever playoff victory on the second hole of sudden-death against LPGA Tour rookie In-Kyung Kim, who also shot 8-under par (70-67-71-72).
βI had a good feeling and I was trying to be patient and it was worth it making the eagle on 17 really,β said Ochoa, who now owns a 1-4 playoff record. βIt was very special. I will remember that day for the rest of my life and winning my first playoff.β
Down by three strokes going into hole 17, a 468-yard, par-5, Ochoa hit a 4-iron to 20 feet from 205 yards and sank her eagle putt. Kim made par and moved to hole 18 with a one-stroke lead. She flew the green with an 8-iron from 112 yards and chipped from the back rough to seven feet. Ochoa two-putted for par, leaving Kim with the putt to win the tournament, but it lipped out and the pair headed back the tee at 18.

Lorena Ochoa Rocks the Headlines |
Ochoa earns first playoff, 12th career victory. Lorena Ochoa's second win at the Wegmans LPGA in three years was her third of the season and 12th of her LPGA career. After a two-hole, sudden-death playoff, Ochoa (69-71-67-73=280, -8) defeated rookie In-Kyung Kim (70-67-71-72=280, -8) by making par on the second hole. It was the first playoff at the event since 1989 when Patty Sheehan defeated Ayako Okamoto on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff. In five career playoffs, this was Ochoa's first victory. Earlier in the season, she lost to Nicole Castrale on the first hole of sudden death at the Ginn Tribute Hosted by ANNIKA. Seven of Ochoa's wins have come with her as a leader or co-leader entering the final round. In the other six events where she has entered as a leader or co-leader, she has finished runner-up five times and fifth once. Her win also gave her 30 points in the Rolex Player of the Year standings to surpass Suzann Pettersen (128 points) and take over the top spot with 156 points in her quest to defend her 2006 Rolex Player of the Year title. |
