LPGA.com caught up with RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup defending champion Karrie Webb for a quick Q&A. Webb talks about the key to playing well this week, her favorite holes at Wildfire Golf Club and what she likes to do while in Phoenix.
LPGA: How did it feel to win the inaugural RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup and donate all that money to charity?
WEBB: It was such a great honor to win the inaugural Founders Cup. I don't think we can celebrate our history enough and it's always great to have our Founders come out to any event. We can never thank them and the women before us for the platform they have given us today. As for the charity side of the event, I loved the concept of giving monies to the LPGA Foundation to aid Girls golf. I also loved that I was able to split my side of the charity monies with a charity I have supported for many years and means so much to me, the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation. As well being able to send much need charity monies to the relief work in Japan after the earthquake/tsunami that ravaged their country in early March of last year. I have always had a tremendous amount of support from the people of Japan as well as many Japanese companies.
LPGA: What is the key to playing well at Wildfire Golf Club?
WEBB: I think driving it well and staying out of the desert is key to setting up good birdie opportunities.
LPGA: How does it match with your game?
WEBB: I think with desert golf courses like Wildfire they are very clear and defined on how to play the hole. If you hit it where the green grass is more often than not you are off to a good start. I think that defined nature of the course helps me focus on what shot needs to be played.
LPGA: What are your favorite holes?
WEBB: I think the 7th hole is my favorite on the course. It's quite a narrow driving hole and being on the fairway is key to being able to hit the green with anywhere from a five to seven iron into a kidney shaped green guarded by water on the right.
LPGA: What are you looking forward to that week?
WEBB: I am looking forward to defending but also catching up with some of the Founders as well as some of the many great women who have come before us.
LPGA: What are your favorite things to do while in Phoenix?
WEBB: Phoenix is always early on in the year I have tended to be a lot more focused on working than finding fun things to do around town. I know I do love to find a great Mexican restaurant when I am there. I know...again with food but what greater pleasure is there in life than a great meal!!
