Off-season is over and I am really excited to start the 2010 season. Before I tee it up next week, I thought it would be nice to introduce myself to everyone. My name is Maria Jose Uribe but everyone calls me "Mariajo Uribe". I was born 20 years ago at Giron, a really small colonial town in Colombia, but I grew up in a city close by called Bucaramanga. An interesting fact about this region is that we eat ants (hormigas culonas), yes ANTS!!!! It usually takes a while to convince someone to try them, but almost everyone ends up loving them. It is also a good place to practice extreme sports such as paragliding, rafting, rappelling, and more.
Last summer I decided to turn professional after attending two years at UCLA. At that moment, it was a tough decision to make. I loved my team and learned a lot of good things during those two years. College was an incredible experience that helped me mature as a golfer and as a person. I got to meet friends that will be with me forever. Probably what I miss the most from those days is traveling with my team, coach's peanut butter pretzels, Alicia's trail mix, "Latino" meetings at the hotel, 7 a.m. Friday practice at Belair, and so many other things. All those memories, friends, and life lessons while be with me forever and are a big part of who I am today. Even though I am not a current member of the team, I will always be a Bruin.
Despite the fact I was not studying last semester, I still kept myself busy getting ready for Q-School. I spent my free time putting some pieces together at my foundation - FORE. I had started it a couple of months ago with my family, but still needed to raise some money. By the end of the year, I had accomplished my goal of getting my Tour card and influencing a small part of the Colombian youth. Thus, I am motivated to keep up the work and have a good rookie season. I am enthusiastic about starting this new journey and I enjoy every single part of it.
Wish you all few putts and lots of birdies,
