Jiyai Shin Opens Her Bag
Rolex Rankings No. 4 Jiyai Shin captured the 2010 Evian Masters Presented by Societe Generale in dramatic style with a clutch birdie on the par-5 18th. Shin entered the final round two strokes behind playing partner, Morgan Pressel. Playing in the last group, Shin reeled off birdies on holes four, five and eight for an outward nine three-under-par 33. She then birdied the 13th before making pars on 14, 15, 16 and 17. Standing on the 18th tee, Shin needed a birdie to break a four-way tie with Pressel, Alexis Thompson and Na Yeon Choi. Both Shin and Pressel had great looks at birdie on the final green. Shin's putt stood just outside that of Pressel. Putting first, Shin made her fifth birdie of the day. Pressel needed to sink her birdie putt to force a playoff. She narrowly missed, leaving her in a tie for second with two others.
Come Monday morning Jiyai Shin is projected to be the new Rolex Rankings No. 1. Shin, who first ascended to the No. 1 position on Monday May 3, after the Tres Marias Championship, held the position for seven weeks before the current Rolex Rankings No. 1 Ai Miyazato took the top spot. Shin was forced to withdraw prior to the State Farm LPGA Classic for an emergency appendectomy. She sat out two weeks before returning to the LPGA Championship Presented by Wegmans, only to find her No. 1 position gone. Shin fought through admitted pain that week and finished in an impressive tie for third. She followed that performance with a fifth at the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic Presented by Kroger and a tie for fifth two weeks ago at the U.S. Women's Open.
Shin now owns seven LPGA tournament titles. She won three tournaments including the Ricoh Women's British Open as a non-member in 2008, and captured another three during her rookie campaign in 2009. In 2009, Shin was the Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year and nearly became the first player since Nancy Lopez in 1977 to sweep Rookie of the Year, Player of the Year and LPGA money list honors in the same year.
